I'm glad that the movie was edited the way it was and certain parts were left out. It seems like in the original uncut/unseen version. Del came off as being somewhat of an beep There's a scene in the script where Del goes through all Neal's belongings while he's in the shower at the hotel, not to steal anything but just to snoop around and find out more about Neal. Also he takes $20 out of Neal's wallet to pay for the pizza, which is mentioned in the movie at the diner. But he goes in it because he only has a hundred dollar bill. When he tells Neal about this after he gets out of the shower Neal gets upset and Del says something like "you were in the shower, what was I supposed to do? send the pizza boy in to look at your dick!? The thing is, Del could have called into the shower and asked his permission before he went into his wallet for the $20. In the movie when he says "you went into my wallet last night for pizza" it was implied to me that that's what happened. Also in the uncut version there is much more dialogue in the telephone call scenes when Neal calls his wife. It seems like she was made out to be a real bitch who had it in her mind that the only reason Neal was late getting home is because he was having an affair and that he made up "Del Griffith" as a cover up, for this woman he was sneaking around with. So I gotta say I am really glad that the uncut version has never been released because it really ruins certain characters and character aspects that we see in the edited version. However there are some great scenes that were in the original version. There is a part at the JFK airport where Del is at the ticket counter booking his flight and can't make up his mind between smoking or non smoking because he's thinking about quitting. There's a scene where Neal rebebuttles against sharing a room with Del at the Braidwood Inn and Del recommends Neal pay for the room so he won't feel like he's imposing on Del. Which explains Del's line "I even let you pay for it so you wouldn't feel like a freeloader!" Also the movie did not orininally end where it did, the original ending had Del and all Neal's family sitting around the thanksgiving dinner table with Neal's daughter Marti saying a thanksgiving prayer, and Del helping her out in the parts he couldn't remember.

Interesting. Personally I would love to see an ultimate edition of Plane's Train's And Automobiles.
As someone who loves acting, but also film-making and editing footage. I would be up to the task and love to be given the chance of shifting through all the footage, to bring a new complete edition, putting back in lots of footage, if it still exists.
As much as I love Plane's Trains and Automobiles, now that I know lots of footage was removed from the final film. I feel and sense there is a lot missing, a new complete version of the film would be great.
It wouldn't replace what we got now, but it would be an alternative that could be fun to visit and watch. Especially since John Candy is no longer with us, it would be nice to see footage of him acting in scenes, that we haven't seen before.

That is really interesting, yes, I agree, having Del snip a $20 out of Neil's wallet would not have made him much of a sympathetic character. Hughes, I think, really had found the right balance and transforming Neal into a better man at the end was a really great payoff for a movie. Someone here, quite a while back, had mentioned that there was supposed to be a scene that explained the huge trunk, that Del was carrying around artifacts from the home he had shared with Marie, I think that would have had me bawling my eyes out so I am glad they didn't show that part either 🙂
        Everyone gets everything he wants.

Try to make up your mind.
          Hint: it's NEAL, not NEIL.

I would love to read that. Where did you find it? It sounds like it explains a lot. I wish they wouldn't have cut the black eye scene. Leaving it out just leaves plot hole.

I would love to see the full 3 hour version of this movie. Just to see all those scenes. So very curious.

I'd love to see more as well, this is one of my all-time favorite films. But hard to do a Director's Cut without the Director. 😞

The page no longer exists on your website, and the datafilehost link just leads to an executable file that I don't trust.
Any chance of making it available again?

Actually that does clear up something I always found weird about the movie. The wife's reactions always seemed so melodramatic to me. Like seriously lady your husband's just a little late, it's not that big of a deal!
But now, ok so that's why she's so happy at the end especially seeing that Del is real. I'll just keep that info for my own head cannon the next time I watch.

That was always a mystery to me as well. The way they look at each other when he finally makes it home, and the way Del and her greet each other was always very strange to me. It was as if something else was going on - well now we know.
                                      Great post - thanks!

Me too. In my mind, the way she and Del looked at each other, I thought perhaps THEY had an affair and knew each other! Neal is probably thinking at the end he can kill two birds with one stoneoffer a place for Del to have Thanksgiving dinner, and prove to his wife that he's real.

After reading this I caught that bit in the diner about the pizza. I always wondered where Del got the beer from he spilled on the bed in the motel! so I guess this ties that together.
