That's a loaded question and there's not one easy answer considering that there are so many factors to consider (political, cultural, social, economic, etc). I personally believe multiculturalism played a huge role in dividing this country. Too much diversity divides a people and can lead to a nation's downfall. How can you have a united country when its citizens don't even speak the same language anymore or when its citizens have entirely different ideas of what constitutes "right" and "wrong"? It goes beyond the "red state" vs "blue state" thing. Being an American now consists of simply living within our borders and being a citizen, nothing more required. Therein lies the problem.
During the late 19th century and early 20th century, many ethnic European immigrants arrived in the US. These newcomers (Poles, Irish, Italians, Germans, Jews, etc) found alienation and hardship at first but eventually assimilated because they had enough in common with the WASP majority. They more or less had the same values and shared the same ideals as the majority and eventually learned the English language, they
wanted
to become Americans and so they did. But in 1965 we opened up the floodgates to the nonwhite or Third World nations via The Immigration Act of 1965 and since then America has been slowly transformed into something unrecognizable. These newcomers - many of them decent, hardworking people - have changed the overall composition and character of America. They're not assimilating into America (i.e., "the melting pot" ideal) as much as they are
changing
the very character of the country.
In 1960 America was 90% white (European-American). Today our population is under 60% white (65%, if you include "white" Hispanics). The Western values that created the United States have been called into question and our Founders are now derided as "racists" by our political and cultural elites. One wonders: Where to now America? Are we destined to become a multilingual, multiethnic racial hodgepodge like Brazil? Is THAT our future, a banana republic rife with racial, class and social division and barely held together by a shaky economy and overreaching military?

But, consider this: Maybe our country has just reached an expiration point and decline and division are inevitable. I don't see any way out of this mess we're in. Trump and MAGA are the culprits, you say? Nah, they're merely a REACTION to what's going on. They're not the CAUSE of the problem. When a nation is in decline, political division and the rise of demagogues is inevitable. IMHO America's best days are behind us. -

Black people in a city and state that never even had slavery are demanding over $300,000 per person in reparations. They claim that will finally make them 'whole' people in America.
I think it will widen divisions.
And once they do it, others will want it.
And once they burn through that money, they will want more.
Diversity is slowly killing America. -
