yup, it is not as funny as it is hyped..but the reason I think is that this is not intended for today's generation.I mean, we have different sense of comedy!

This I agree withtoday's generation seems to appreciate more obvious humor. I'm not knocking it - I'll be the first to admit I laughed my ass off watching "Superbad" (Who are you? Seal? LOL).
"A Fish Called Wanda" has many hilarious scenesmostly due to Kevin Kline's perfection of an idiot American ex-CIA hitman. It was one of the very few times that the Academy recognized a comedic role with an award. Personally, I thought when Otto tried "seducing" Ken because he dresses really interestingly was one of the funniest things I'd seen in years.
Again - back to your generation - my 17 yr old daughter grew up watching films like "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" & loves it. So perhaps it's just you. -

Completely agree. Was told it was a great comedy only to be horribly disappointed. I think my problem was that I just more or less despised every single character given. But that's just my opinion and I know I'm in the minority. Just wanted to say that there are others who agree.

It doesn't surprise me so many people find this unfunny. I remember watching this on VHS with my family when it was first released, even though I wasn't old enough. None of us laughed. Last year as an adult I rewatched it and didn't laugh once then either, though I was certainly expecting to with so much I thought had gone over my head 22 years before then being the age I was, but no. There's fun situations for sure, and Kevin Kline helps create one of the most unique characters I've ever seen in a film, but it's just not funny.

'A Fish Called Wanda' is very black and I find the humor seeps from the character's actions and situations they find themselves in, rather than obvious visual slapstick gags that I feel many may have been expecting. Much of it is in the timing and to me this was genius. A fact recognised by the academy with the Best Director nomination bestowed on Charles Crichton and a Best Original Screenplay nomination. Not to mention Kevin Kline's Supporting Actor win who stole the show from the mainly strong British castif not for

, I would say he deserved it.
These are despicable people, doing despicable things and the film makes me laugh at the situations internally rather than give out expressive guffaws. I find I am laughing at them rather than with them and this was the point of the humorlaughing at the films derisive nature in spite of ones self. Some of the best comedies play out when it is unpredictable what is coming around the corner and AFCW on first viewing in 88' knocked me for a six. Subsequent viewings have still entertained. -

Some enjoy comedy that slaps you in the face to show it's humor. I like movies like that too. But it's nice to see a smart comedy where the comedy is more subtle. They are a lot harder to pull off. -

Comedy and horror are the two genres where subjectivity and taste can produce wildly different opinions, so I would never be comfortable telling someone they were wrong, or an idiot, or had no taste because they didn't care for a particular film.
However, the "I didn't laugh once throughout the entire movie" line tells me you're either not being entirely honest or you are a tragically dour person. I mean, queue up one of the many Seltzer & Friedberg atrocities and I'll find something to laugh about. I might contemplate suicide for 95% of the runtime, but there would be a couple of chuckles to be had.
Honestly, I can't imagine a human with sight and hearing intact sitting in front of "A Fish Called Wanda" and finding not a solitary gag or line funny. Just doesnt' compute. It's like saying "I've never seen a puppy that I find cute." What do you have against puppies?I have meddled with the primal forces of nature and I will atone.

I watched it for the first time since its initial release back in the late 80's and laughed just as hard - the dog scenes alone are hysterical.
Trolls? Meh, it's a world where Jackass gets high ratings. I prefer films A Fish Called Wanda. -

I know this thread is almost 10 years old, but I found this movie hilarious when I first saw it. Kevin Kline as Otto was awesome!! Cheesy? Yes. Campy? Yes. But very clever and witty. Loved the cast. I haven't seen this movie in years, but I may add it to my Netflix queue.
If CTU would let Jack Bauer do his job, it would be called 12. -

This is just about people giving their own opinion, since obviously everyone will have a different perception of how funny they found the film. So let me give mine: Overall, I liked it, it was worth watching, and I spent 100-something amusing minutes watching it. There were a few particularly funny scenes
(the three dog assassinations, John Cleese robbing his own house and being beaten up by Kevin Kline trying to protect the house, John Cleese arousing Jamie Lee Curtis by reciting Russian poetry
), but overall it wasn't the kind of fireworks display of one excellent joke after another, the way some other great comedies - Billy Wilder's come to mind, for instance, are. Still, overall not a bad film at all. -

Comedy is very much a matter of taste.
I think this is hilarious, but when I showed a friend he was not all that impressed.
On the other hand imho if Pauly shore, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, and Ben Stiller hopped in a van and drove it over a cliff it would be the first time any one of them put a smile on my face. -

I agree. I just stopped watching after the "rob his own house" scene. If anything, it's British humor, which I rarely find to be funny.
