I can't understand how anyone could not find this movie hilarious. As a matter of fact, the only comedies I can place in

You're welcome. Not into Disney movies at all. I have no problem with extreme violence or profanity. It's just when you use it and act like it's funnythat's where I draw the line. You probably think the Three Stooges are hysterical too.

preppy-3; As we all know, comedy is subjective; what you find funny, someone else may not and vice versa. Just so you know, the live fish were replaced with jello molds; so no live fish were eaten. Even though someone appears to get run over by a steamroller, it's clear by the end of the movie this person suffered no damage at all. So no one's dead from that scene. The dogs that were "killed" in the movie were not killed on camera, only shown after the accident; obviously, no animals were harmed during the making of this movie. The suffocation scene was showing that even though the person administering the suffocation thinks he's smart, in fact he's not as smart as he thinks he is. That is why he immediately remedies this by removing the object from the person's mouth so they don't suffocate.
Now I know you can figure all this out by yourself, but your comments might make other people not try this movie. Let them watch it and see if they like it or not. Maybe they find vicious slapstick amusing.
By the way, the scene where Kline's character tries to tell Cleese's wife he's from the CIA is, in my opinion, hilarious! -

As you said comedy comedy is subjective and I was well aware that no animals were actually killed (although I heard those were real live fish used) and no one was hurt or killedbut I don't find even the implication that someone is being almost suffocated to death and innocent dogs being killed even mildly amusing. I just don't like violent vicious slapstick at all. If someone's loves itfine. More power to them. However this is a message board which is open to all comments. I just posted because I can't figure out why people love this movie so much.

The movie wasn't funny at all, you're far from being alone, my friend.
The only scenes that were remotely funny were with Kevin Kline in them.I own you.

I've seen it a few times, and while I don't laugh (The first couple of times i was literally convulsing) as much now, I admire it even more as a film for its truly brilliant writing.
I couldn't agree more. I don't literally laugh out loud anymore, but I still find it thoroughly entertaining, especially Palin and Kline.

Laughing is one mental response to the unexpected. One would have to have a certain expectation and then have it foiled. If you weren't pre-programmed to have an expectation (that the writers/creators were steering you toward) you wouldn't get the payoff (and the mental reaction). There's no value judgment here. Just different experience brought to the table.
As an example, one of the funniest things I've seen was in Ealing studios Kind Heart and Coronets. There's an explosion nearly all off screen and severely understated. And it was hilarious to me. Why? I don't know. And it's not like I'm some acolyte of Ealing's - the humor IS largely too British for my Mid-Western American background. But that one element in that one movie killed me. -

I came here to see if and if so why anyone had ever found this funny. If I hadn't known it was a comedy I would scarcely have known. I made it through the first 10 minutes confused as to what was supposed to be funny and then gave up.
I guess I'm a troll too? Everyone who doesn't agree with you is a troll? -

The first half was so boring I was going to give it a 6, but the second half got so good, I have to give it an 8. So many funny things happened, such as the guy who loves animals accidentally killing them all and Otto showing up everywhere and the lawyer's behavior in court, as well as JLC's remark about the sawed off shotgun.

Frankly, I did not find this movie funny at all. I watched complete movie and there was not a single moment where I laughed. There were some stupid and vulgar jokes but that is not my taste. Once movie complete, my wife and I were looking at each others face. Where were the jokes ???? There are lot funnier movies out there which did not get such hype and high ratings.
