Tom Cruise is such a talented actor and absolutely awesome in this movie and it was a scandal that he did not win the Oscar. I suspect because the Academy can not tell his private life apart from his acting skills and he will never win no matter what

I have of course seen it and am a HUGE fan of Daniel Day-Lewis, as always his performance was Excellent. However he does not move me AS much as Tom Cruise did, the difference is that the leading role in My left foot has a tendency to get sentimental and predictable, Tom Cruise is heartbreaking and you feel his pain so much it hurts. The development his character is undergoing is extremely challenging. I admit it's a close race but there is no doubt in my mind that Tom Cruise should have won.

Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry McGuire, and Vanilla Sky are Tom Cruise's best performances in my opinion

I agree it's the best with magnolia and collateral being 2nd and 3rd respectively

                  I think
                  Collateral
is his best film performance. He was great in this movie, however I absolutely loathe Oscar-bait roles the one in
Born on the 4th of July
. The fact that SO MANY actors have played roles like this and won Oscars is proof that they are nothing more than award-begging performances. The character he played in
                  Collateral
was a much tougher role to pull off and he nailed it.

And Happy Belated, Mr. Cruise! The best work I've seen of him was with the USO. God bless those who volunteer their time to support our troops!

I liked his performance in Rain Man more than this one.

Yeah, just like what 'BoSoxRules' said. I liked him a whole lot more in "Rain Man". That's not to say that I didn't like him here, he was really good in this. I just liked "Rain Man" more.
He was great here (Born), but fantastic there (Rain Man).
Maybe I'm just biased because my signature is from Rain Man. shrugs
