I couldnt stand the mother either, she was completely ignorant and unsympathetic, hiding behind her religion. And then kicking him outyeah, organized religion is great! Kick your son when he's downand legless. -

I re-watched the movie last night and had forgotten how much the mother bothered me, especially when Kovic returns home. She doesn't embrace him or even emote the way I'd expect a mother to do under the circumstances.

She was an extremist. Plain and simple. Her actions and words cannot be blamed on Catholicism or God. Many extremists around the world claim to be doing what they do for a god of some kind. I personally blame her for her extreme attitude and behavior. Not religion.

stuff wouldn't have flown with him either because he was a combat vet from WW II himself.
He completely disrespected them and I hoped he apologized later on (if he actually did what was depicted in the movie).

No she is not a 'bitch'she was a product of her environment. Having lived through the Great Depression, WWII and being a true, patriotic American, her world view ended at the American borders. She couldn't understand empathy because when she was growing up it was about survivial. Religion was the opiate of the masses that allowed her lack of humanity to make her feel morally superior. Her job was to be strong and instill that fierceness in her children, especially Ron, was her way of preparing him to survive and be successful in life. Failure was not an option. Being strong and tough was a survival mechanism of the people of her generation. Empathy was weakness. Her coldness was considered strengthreligion was about morals and being right. But life is much more complicated, especially as we became a global superpower..there are things done in the name of 'right' that are wronglike Vietnam - that we're just wrong. ATthat time we trusted our government to lead us in the right direction. Ron believed what she did. Then he lost the use of his legs, the war was revealed to be a lie told to us, and he started questioning everything he was taught - as we all did. Strength isn't in bullying or being infallible, it takes more courage to bein touch with our humanity, and learning from our mistakes. And it is our duty and resposibility to question our leaders and hold them accountable for their stupid decisions. Yet this same generation allowed us to go to Iraq twice and Afghanistan. Civil wars we had no business getting involved in. When will we learn?
