People hated this movie probably because they saw the British Mini-Series. the mini-series was a drama with some amazing performances from actors and actresses that we wouldn't have expected them from.
Aside from that. This film was poor. It copped out on the come-uppance of the Mary Fisher character (meets a grizzly end in the mini-series). And Bob gets back with She-Devil Pah! Cop out!
Meryl Streep was excellent as the OTT author who lives in her books but the character was written one dimensionally. This was a woman who was happy to take somebody elses husband and children away from their mother but where was the malice in Streep. It was no where to be seen.
I won't get too carried away because the screenplay was obviously written as a comedy but I feel ripped off because so much of each character's character has been torn away as a result.

I loved all the scenes too..But I absolutely loved the scene where Mary was outside writing her book, and she couldnt concentrate, and then there was gum stuck to her hand and shes like ''Nicolette(in a real soft voice)'' then she paces down to Nicolette hurriedly and cant turn the CD Player off, and she just uses both hands and keeps banging the CD Player, then practically dives over Nicoletter to get the Phonehilariousand also when Mrs. trumper rings in the middle of Mary's interview, and says Mrs. Fisher needs T.L.C. and Mary doesnt know what it is, and asks ''Is that some sort of drug?''
But, really all of its good, I think Meryl's facial expressions were to die for!

Meryl stole the show from Roseanne for sure! She's got good range. My favorite is her dialogue with the nursing home director when she's told her mother was kicked out and needed TLC. "TLC? What's that some kind of new drug?"

I love Mary's mother too! "She was a teenage tramp, she would do it anywhere, with anyone at anytime!" OMG! My mother would have been buried in the backyard along with 'Ma Cherie'.
But the best part is when Mary lays down the law, "I'm taking my life back, Bob!!" Meryl Streep, priceless!

I agree, I don't think Bob and Ruth get back together. She is a successful, independent woman now, why would she want a backstabbing, two timing, philanderer?
Everyone seems to think this movie is about revenge. I think it may have started out as Ruth trying to hurt Bob as much as she hurt, but in the end, it was about women realizing that no matter how they start, they have value and can turn their lives around. I LOVE that.
Even more hilarious is the effect on everyone around Ruth and Bob. Cosmic justice.

Indeed. That is a message that I got from this movie. It proves that the women in these film are way better than someone like Bob. I was happy that Mary Fisher's character got a happy ending, despite her ruining another woman's family. Yes, she was apathetic on what she had done but Bob played a part on that too and if only he chose Ruth and the children over Mary, their family would still be together. This movie is lot more relevant to our times now that divorce are happening everywhere and anywhere. It teaches women that they can be independent from men and women had the right to do so. Who knows, it will turn out that you are better than your man. :))
I'm glad Ruth is now a successful woman and didn't chose to go back to that jerk-ass, promiscuous Bob. Ruth made the lives of the women better and made them realized that there is more to life thann what the society shoves down our throats.
This is indeed an excellent film, underrated fil with great actors and actresses and a message to offer.

Personally, my favorite scene is probably the dinner scene where they're eating soup and Mary tells them what it is in French. When the kids ask what it is, her mother says, "It's French for dog puke." Then Bob spits out his water, and you can tell Mary wants to strangle her, and instead, says in a very tight voice, "Actually, it's cream of watercress."
Me too!!! I crack up every time I see it. I suspect Mary just made up that French-sounding word to show off and give this false image of being "high-class". I liked how it made the kids giggle also; I think the kids liked Mary's mom. Her mother just made me laugh so hard and I loved how she blasted Mary's phony image to pieces.
Another favorite scene is a bit later in the film when Ruth is staying late at the Vesta Rose agency leafing thru the ppl. magazine and sees the picture of her kids posing with Mary and Bob and tears fill Ruth's eyes and you can see that she really misses her kids and can't wait to be re-united with them again. It's kind of a touching scene. When she reaches for her own picture with her kids in it, first-time viewers might get the initial thought that Ruth is reaching for tissues. Even when she views her own picture, you can tell Ruth still has to fight back her tears.
                                      Roseanne + Jackie forever

I had to go back and listen, because at the time I didn't understand one of the words she used. SHe said, "potage creme de resson." This means cream of "resson" stew, which she translates as "cream of watercress." Watercress is apparently "cresson d'eau." Maybe she forgot the exact right word, or maybe it's another word for cress. I don't know.
