Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — UHF

    avortac — 12 years ago(July 21, 2013 01:42 AM)

UHF is a really fun movie, and although Weird Al admitted that the movie is just an excuse to make all the skits he wanted, it's still an uplifting experience, even without the nostalgy factor.
However, I think the funniest part is when Weird Al yells to the big executive boss (the villain of the movie): "Hey, R.J.!", and the PHONE STOPS RINGING IN MID-RING!
I mean, that's so subtle, yet so surreal and of course physically impossible, but also so ABSURD - that the caller, who can't possibly hear what's going on in the office, would not only immediately hang up the phone, and do it mid-ring, that I couldn't help laughing at that point almost uncontrollably.
How is a phone like that from the '80s going to stop in mid-ring? Even if you stop the ringing mechanism itself, the BELL will still echo the last "pinggggg"-sound for awhile. The sound of a bell like that will not stop so abruptly and suddenly.
Which makes it so incredibly funny - it's like having a bird stop in mid-air or something surreal like that. It SO over-over-over-emphasizes the power and atmosphere of FEAR that the boss creates, that it's just ridiculous, and it's hard not to laugh when even typing this.
Man, that is a GENIUS-moment. Weird Al may be many things, but sometimes he REALLY hit the nail in the head, so friggin' perfectly that it's just a masterpiece, and a real privilege and blessing to get to experience.
And then the phones continue ringing after the 'scary moment' has passed, heh.. man. What perfection of humor!

Yeah, I always loved that part. I caught it the first time I saw it 1990 or so. It was funny then, and still is today.
Mirror inspector is a job I could really see myself doing.

Ha! I am right there with you. That has always been one of my favorite gags. I even started laughing just reading about it!

If you haven't already, check out Top Secret! (1984), it's full of those clever surreal bits

I love the part where they're parachuting and just floating right next to each other talking and bumping shoulders, meanwhile you know that their parachutes should be tangled up and they'd be falling to the ground.
"Dan Marino should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell. Would you like a cookie son?"

Funny/sometimes overlooked When Al asks the time and the Karate student's arm punches through the wall wearing a wristwatch. "7:30?!"
