How is Graham making money?

or what the hell is he doing in life in the first place? Or what brings him to Baton Rouge? If he's seeking closure with Elizabeth, why didn't he at least contact her?
It's never explained in the movie. Graham is pretty much a carte blanche. And, cinematically speaking, this is probably a good idea, since we know so much about the other three characters. This imbalance creates tension. -

If you read the printed screenplay with Soderbergh's diary on the production, it was originally planned to indicate that Graham got all the cash he hides in his mattress from a settlement from a car wreck. The Elizabeth angle (his motive for coming to Baton Rouge) was also greatly enlarged, but Soderbergh decided in the end to streamline the material so as to focus on the four principals. I personally think he should have ommitted any reference to the unseen Elizabeth as its inclusion in the finished product looks like an afterthought.

He doesn't
make
(that is, earn) any money. In the movie it is explained that he
has
money, which he colloquially refers to as it being "inside the mattress." It's not unheard of for someone to have money from savings, inheritance, some sort of cash settlement, etc. I've always spent less than I earned, and more than twice over the years I've been tempted to exit the rat race and take a year or two off to travel, write, etc., living off my savings. That's what Graham is doing.
