I remember on this board I think, someone saying about Papa's Got A Brand New Excuse," "There is nothing funny about a Dad abandoning his son for the second time! Fresh Prince is supposed to be a funny comedy. Why did they have such an unfunny serious episode? "
The response was something like ,"Would you really enjoy a comedy that only made you laugh all the time ? I wouldn't. A comedy that makes me laugh all the time would get old really quickly. A good comedy makes you laugh and think. " Good point.
Drake is repetitive. He just raps the same thing over and over as if he is in an insane asylum!LOL:D

That is a good point, I noticed it on other sitcoms they would have 1 or 2 unfunny episodes. Moesha had a few of them, Martin I believe had about 1 or 2, A Different World had a few unfunny ones, some that was half funny and half unfunny. I like that its great to have something different like you said.

I don't remember any serious episodes on Martin. All of them were funny.

Like I said I couldn't remember if Martin did or not, I'm thinking about that Christmas episode where the guy was holding everyone hostage on Martin show. Maybe that episode did have some funny parts.

            Martin serious episodes:
            Season 1:
Break Up, part 1 and 2 (it's a three-parter but that third part is comedic)
            Season 2:
Love Is In Your Face, part 1 and 2
            Martin's on the Move
            Season 3:
            Break Up to Make Up
Momma's Baby, Martin's Maybe (not really "serious" but Martin grew a lot as a character here when he thought he was a dad and refused to be a deadbeat).
            Love is a Beach
            Season 4:
Why Can't We Be Friends, part 1 and 2
            Season 5:
California, Here We Come part 2: the second half of the series finale

Why Can't We Be Friends Part 1 and 2 are creepy in hindsight now that Thomas Mikal Ford is dead. In WCWBF part 1, Tommy and Martin get into a huge fight over a stupid suitcase. When Tommy ends up in a huge accident, Martin is disgusted with himself for arguing with him over a stupid suitcase. Luckily he survived and Tommy and Martin make up.

Wish I’d seen it lol. The answer is simple: to try out their acting chops in other situations. What we the viewer learned is that Will Smith could absolutely kill it. That last scene was straight up
                heartbreaking
and it was all due to he and the actor playing Phil. (Name escapes me atm) “Why don’t he want me, man?”
I just caught that ep and rewound it twice to watch it again and again. It is the single defining moment of the entire show in my eyes and was probably used in future casting consideration for movies he eventually ended up starring in.
Top notch acting by both actors, hands down. Worth a thousand laughs.
