I can't remember if it's mentioned. In 'Papa's got a brand new excuse' it's revealed his name is Lou Smith and in 'Guess who's coming to marry' Aunt Viv says
Here we are. The Smith sisters, loud, live and in color
'. So the names alone are no indication.

Maybe they were second cousins who got married? That would explain A LOT.

I think the last name thing was an inconsistency, lots of sitcoms have them especially when it's an episode from the first season and a much later season episode. Kinda like how on Friends how they kept screwing up their ages throughout the series.

Wait now there are dramatic inconsistencies and then blatant ones. The series was far enough along at that point to make such a mistake.

It is an inconsistency, but Smith is the most common last name in the United States, they very much could have both been Smiths, therefore, a last name wouldn't need to change after marriage.

Yes but we're not talking about reality! We're talking about characters that have been
                  created
. I just find it unusual that the writers would have given them the same name!

there is nothing unrealistic about the setup in the programme. it is by no means a stretch of the imagination. it's not like the programme is about dwarves and elves which is far more unrealistic

Were you born simple or did you have an accident or something?
