I think the last name thing was an inconsistency, lots of sitcoms have them especially when it's an episode from the first season and a much later season episode. Kinda like how on Friends how they kept screwing up their ages throughout the series.

Wait now there are dramatic inconsistencies and then blatant ones. The series was far enough along at that point to make such a mistake.
