When Cady kills the private investigator and housemaid. Surely at that stage the police would put them in protective custody and there'd be a manhunt for Cady.
If at first you don't succeed, you're not Chuck Norris

Perhaps the Bowdens believed that not even protective custody could prevent Max from terrorising them further. And fleeing gave Sam the ideal opportunity to once and for all put an end to the threat to this family.
Max could have evaded the manhunt. Or murdered all of the manhunters. And then continued to pursue the family irregardless of their location.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, but it all comes down to..just think of the movie as a horror pic. The fleeing fam is the stupid choice fleeing victim by a ravenous murderer. it would be much more sensible to stay, but to move the plot along, they had to act stupid and try to isolate themselves.

Cady killed the maid and private investigator with the Bowden's piano wire. Remember the scene where Sam notices the wire is missing from the piano? Perhaps in fear of thinking the police would think it was him that committed the murders because there was no proof that Cady did it plus how would Sam explain attempting to kill Cady. After all that was the plan..rig the house so they could kill Cady.
