Actors like Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and Martin Balsam appeared in this violent, "sick" and over the top remake. Why does Hollywood always have to remake good films and make them so bloody and graphic. To attract a new audience? I'll take the original, we never had to see what Mitchum did to his victim. At least in the original the daughter was never sexually attracted to Cady like Juliette Lewis was.

My guess for "why" is money. Maybe using a known successful script (even with changes) with popular actors of the day is a safe investment.
Another example is the 2003 remake of "The Music Man (1962)".
That's why I really respect people like Albert Brooks who come up with new ideas.

I totally agree. The "thumb" scene with DeNiro and Juliette Lewis was just gross. Martin Scorsese made a mistake with a remake of such a classic film. I admire Scorsese greatly, but not for this one.
All due respect to DeNiro and Nolte, Peck and the great Mitchum were far superior in Cape Fear the original.

The remake had to be shockingly graphic to affect moviegoers back in '91. It was the same year that THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS made a ton of money. Besides, Scorsese had a lot to say about various modes of morally dubious sexual mores and presented his character's as far more flawed and dimensional than in the original. The remake is an ambitious drama about contemporary sexuality, guilt, vigilantism (for both the protagonist and antagonist) and the abuse of religion for self-serving purposes. It is, frankly, a work of high art and it's ugly as hell for a reason.

Without a doubt, someone who understands this film and what Scorsese and DeNiro were going for. This film is a Multi-Layered, Stylish, Sick and Twisted Psychological Thriller.
People complain about the Acting when every ounce was purposely meant to trigger a reaction. From the Moment we're watching 'Problem Child' in the theater, we are subject to a Cinematic Assault. Anytime Scorsese does these films, he's usually brushed away by his fans. It's happened with this, 'Bringing Out The Dead' and 'Shutter Island' As if this isn't the man who gave us the Masterpiece that is 'Taxi Driver.'

This is way better than original. Go back to your TV dinner, grandpa.

I don't think actors know if a film will be good or not. They're relying on good editing and other things. I think the orignal actors wanted to honor the orignal movie by making an appearance. I agree with the poster about the thumb scene with DeNiro and Lewis - just really sleazy and uncomfortable to watch.
