For all its flaws, I still enjoy it

I loved this as a college kid many years ago, taking my girlfriend out for an evening to a romantic action flick with great music from massive giants like Bryan Adams and starring a mix of great actors, some on the way down, and some not yet risen.
So I see this thing again after 25 years, and despite being annoyed that Costner can't fake the accent I still found this a lot of fun. I wonder how much is just pure old nostalgia? I can't say, but the movie still makes me laugh (in the right places:). -

I agree with everything you said. I just watched it again for the first time in years on Netflix and yes, there are many flaws and if it was released now (brand new) and if I was to see it as an adult, for the first time, I probably wouldn't like it as much. But since this came out when I was in middle school and I have a lot of memories attached to it, its a classic to me

Quite so. I still really enjoy this film as well. Always have. A lot of the critical ire seems directed as Costner. Never bothered me. I've always been rather lukewarm on Costner, though he has done a few notably good roles (LOVED him in Tin Cup). I don't blame him for the critical ire, but I think I could safely say that his casting did damage the film. If you look elsewhere, the acting really is quite good in this film. I very much enjoyed Freeman, Wincott, Rickman, Mary Elizabeth, the good chap who played Friar Tuck whose name I can't quite recall (no need to remind me, I'll look it up). Lots of fine performances both among the principal and supporting casts.
Love the music. Michael Kamen did a fabulous job, and he will be missed. The action sequences were good, and there were some moments of drama deftly woven into the piece. It had comedy too. Plenty to like about it. Shame to see something as simple as 'Costner isn't really English' tarnish the reputation of an otherwise very good film.
