I have seen Silence of the Lambs several times and watched Hannibal for the first time a couple weeks ago. I recall in Silence, Anthony Hopkins soundedwell not British. But then in Hannibal it sounded a lot more British. I ASSUME Anthony Hopkins just sort of didn't bother putting on the same accent for Hannibal and was just sort of using his natural speaking voice. Or maybe I'm just terrible with accents and that's why I'm not sure what's happening there. Anyone know or mind explaining?

I think so too which in the West is such a scary thought but he is clearly lithuanian like the other said. Which is why I think he is better portrayed in Rising.

I like the series but never saw raising and I didn't watch the Mads Minkelson show because Mads wasn't speaking English very well at that point.
I don't think most people get what a "Lithuanian" is is and so they went with English. I'm not sure if the character in the books is supposed to be sophisticated but it might be hard to sound that way with an Easter European accent.
I knew a heart specialist who came from Slovakia and he was a very arrogant guy who came from royalty. No kidding the guy sounded like someone doing a Dracula imitation. So, maybe they were trying to avoid that. -

Naw that series Was Junk. I couldnt muster it. Almost everyone they casted was a let down.
Mads was a disappointment and a cheap replacement for The Grand Hopkins. I met a girl who was so into him in the Series. I was like wtf but clearly she didnt know what she was talking about.
That is true that most people dont know but I think it's quite easy to see why they went with Anthony. He is a Major Famous and Credible actor and was hot at the time. Let's Face it Hopkins made this movie and character and without him they probably wouldnt be a Movie, A Book, or anything else. Brian Cox as Hannibal was unwatchable. Hopkins Not only made him bizarrely interesting, he gave him that voice. I dont think Most people really give a **** about the Character,
I was going to send the Trailer but I didnt want to give anything away,
It's RISING.
You should definitely watch it. I actually think it's the best in the series if you can imagine but it's heavily panned and hated for that very essence that it give him an origin and most people nowadays hate the idea of making a character with an origin and making him intimate. I think the actor played him well, too well. You'll find ALL of your answers there.

Raising is free on some service I have so I will check it out.
I saw Silence in the movies and haven't watched it much since then. When I saw it, Hannibal was driving me crazy because I was like I KNOW THIS CHARACTER and couldn't figure it out.
Then I remembered Man Hunter which I rented because the soundtrack was by Shriekback a band I liked. I didn't like Man Hunter very much but rented it again and there was Hannibal!
I was amazed they were connected because the production value and acting was way different that Silence.
Anyway, you are right, I remembered in Man Hunter the idea of consulting this doctor serial killer was there but the character didn't stand out that much. Hopkins is super likeable but can get weird fast if he wants, so he was a very good choice.
I remember after Silence came out I did not like that Hannibal was likeable and Hopkins said the same thing and was disappointed people liked his character. But, that turned out to be the big moneymaker for the series. He turned Hannibal into a weird hero against obnoxious people, lol.
I think that's crazy but I did enjoy him a lot. So, seeing replacements for him is a letdown. -

RISING RISING
Manhunter was complete trash and it's a shame it's connected to it. I saw Red Dragon first and was utterly disgusted at this versions( I think I had seen Manhunter in the past but never paid attention to it and was utterly shocked this was the actual original and connected to it). Actually I've always been disgusted of every Red Dragon cast except Ralph Fiennes which I've always admire. Though strangely I've read a lot of acclaim about it and some people trash Red dragon but they are admirers of this one even going so far as praising Cox. I like Michael Mann mostly but this has got to be on the bottom of his trash.
Disappointed? I don't know. He is Anthony Hopkins and for the vast Majority of his career his been a good leading man. To all of a sudden turn him around and make him a Villian, A real one, is more of a surprise. Then he does a lot of things that are worth appealing. They also make him go head to head with the female's appeal in an obvious romance. Giving hints and aid to the real villain of the film and escape him. If he wasn't so likable how can a typically expected lead be in a lead category and win in such short period of time? Because he is expected to lead and even though he wasn't that is how people saw him as. As the whole Fucking Show! Heath Ledger was in the film far more than Hopkins and you can say was the actual lead villain and most interesting aspect and all he got was Supporting. Besides all the vile attempts to vilify Hopkins people can't get passed it and see him for what he really is, not a villain. Attraction, admiration, romance, hero, bad but in a good way.
They only replaced Hopkins in Rising because he was much younger. They tried to do that in Red Dragon and it worked. He was so surprisingly fit and the character was so well written to be feistier that it worked but by Rising it was his entire youth so they couldn't get passed that and Hopkins was so sick of playing the character he didn't even provide an epilogue. I don't know what you think of Julianne Moore replacing Jodie, I can't say I hate her but I did hate that she was replaced and it broke character and Hannibal to me is the weakest of the series. I hated how much more violence, gratuitous, and nonsensical they made it. The ending was disturbing and illogical and at times I wonder what Hopkins was doing in it. I think it was clear that he wanted to bag it for a cash cow. Yea sure, he was good but everything else was bad including the script. I think Julianne Could've broken Jodie but the script just gave her no chance. Not that I think she's better than Jodie but she could've added such a twist that it would've broken so much ground that it would've surpassed all the past. But no, if anything they went the other way and made her go down. Dating Ray Liotta and then watching his brain open with little sympathy. A rushed to little romance. Wtf, she had like no chemistry with Hopkins, which they made like a Hunchback romance. From Blond to Red. The sensitivity of him was gone to an almost admiration to hate. He could've banged her anytime he wanted instead he refuge for long and she went looking for him. I think the romance could've played better with more hype and not one-sided. Instead we have like a cat & mouse game with horrible grotesque in-between followed by the worst of them all. What a terrible ending to a series. Yes, I did like Hannibal but all those year I grew up sort of detesting him because we were taught we were supposed to and didn't really see his romantic side because they didn't really show it and try to hide with instances of inrequited affections. But then it dawn on me, it was like that because it is socially unacceptable, taboo, and society isn't ready for that. So lets just make him a Monster. It's much better that way and it sells. Now I don't know if you know that they actually made Clarice a series. Without Hannibal. Yuck!

Are you saying you did or did not like Red Dragon?
I saw Man Hunter in the movies because I was bored and nothing else to do. I didn't really like it and I hate the lead actor. He's been in one of those NCIS shows, or whatever.
He is amazingly flat and he must have an uncle in showbiz because I don't like him and he doesn't act.
Anyway, I liked the idea of Man Hunter but thought it was a cheap movie and kind or gratuitously gross. I don't get why people want to see people getting tortured and stuff in the way it's shown in some of these films. It's like porn and the filmmakers want to be doing it themselves or something.
I thought Red Dragon was somewhat better in that there was more focus on the character as being crazy.
Anyway, I had forgotten that Julianne Morre was in the sequel. I saw that in the movies too and that was long ago.
I always liked her because I think she is pretty and generally okay, but it was weird not to have Jodie Foster in it. I mean it was a famous character and you're think they would get her. But, as you pointed out, in a way, it was kind of a comedy.
Things were over the top instead of being a serious film noir type of thing. Imagine if it had been dead serious, it could have been really great.
The brain eating scene was once again, too much like porn for me, and I hated it. I hate seeing people get humiliated and that's what that was about.
I noticed that even in Jurrasic Park, any "jerk" died a horrible death. I do not secretly desire to see people I don't like get eaten alive or have their brain slowly destroyed. This content is one reason I hate the people who run Hollywood.
It's funny because Man Hunter was a straight up movie and contained no humor or weirdness for fun. So, in a way it could be one of the best because it's realistic. -

I'm a big Fan of Red Dragon! I think it's best one with Hopkins in it and nobody has ever played the Red Dragon as good as Ralph. I'm a huge fan of his version and am surprised he didnt get nominated by it nor Hopkins. For such a good film it was definitely shone by the Oscars but they drowled on sotl.
You must've been really really bored. Might've gone to a xxx theater. I hate those b-csi actors. They suck and it's fitting cause this film had the feel of a csi show because of Michael Mann who at many times is overrated. If it was for Collateral, I probably wouldnt have liked him. Though he did help Miami Vice.
Uncle, money, or banging someone. Many times this is how it works. A good 80% of the I wonder what they are even doing there and many good actors I've seen or known had never had any shot. They pretty much instruct it in the class as the way to go if you want to get in.
It's no surprise #metoo hit it big but it's of very little of what actually is the reality of it.
They call it torture porn, or gore-fest. I've seen several. Some are actually made quite good if you take out the gore or you understand they are trying to somehow enhance it because in real life it's so much more even if they wont ever get one percent of close to it. But of course there is some that I cant even bare the crank of it and some that that's all they are. The hills have eyes comes to mind and one that I saw which was called the big bad wolf had a gross half wolf having doggystyle with a girl for no apparent reason to the film.
I've always seen silence of the lambs as a cheaply made film on purpose and that is part of is appeal because in reality these types of enviornments are cheap and people know this so it becomes real.
I don't know what they were thinking or what even Hopkins was thinking of going forward without Jodie. They should have all agreed and made it. Instead of just cashing in on the cash-cow. I supposed that's why Hopkins got paid so much for it but was it really worth it? It wasn't art and in many ways I think Jodie won. To me that film was trash in comparison to its full potential and what could've been. With adding Moore, she is a redhead, a spicy cute woman. They could've add flare and hot heated romance between them but instead they ****ed it up and dropped the ball and just made it like an obsession and rejectioned thrill of cat and mouse with a gratuitous ending that left to be desired and wtf was with that and that stupid kid and brain scene. Totally disgusting. Did Hannibal win? I doubt it. He was like more delusional at the end and with no girl and no hand. lol.
I didnt like the Brain scene neither and what was the point of that, and Ray Liotta even being in it. I think it was a clear demonstration of power and jealousy of Hannibal that he was her boyfriend and he wanted her all to himself but it was not conveyed clearly and never was throughout the film. Not even her attraction towards him. It was heavily stupid!
I actually like Jurrassic Park the first one and the monsters eating humans scenes, for entertainment high digital purposes. The dinosaurs like quite real and it's pretty amazing.
yea but manhunter though serious had no chemistry and thus failed. Though Hannibal is serious psychopathic killer, he has quite a sense of humor and I think that's part of his appeal.

I have wondered for many years how some actors get into acting and stay there. Some seem to have no talent and can't even make facial expressions.
If I was handed an acting career by some rich friend, I would at least try to act, lol.
The manhunter guy has a totally dead face and has barely changed in appearance. He could be a robot for all I know.
Anyway, on a positive note, I watched Hannibal Rising last night based on your suggestion.
When that first came out I thought it looked like a cheap horror movie but actually had good production values and had a story.
I do not like how Hannibal has evolved though.
In Silence of the Lambs he was like a cult leader for other serial killers. On top of that Hannibal seemed like a guy who is very smart but thinks he's smarter than everyone and hates people for it. So he kills random people because he hates people. That's why he likes other serial killers.
In Hannibal Rising, he had a story similar to Batman, like what if Batman killed people. He lost his family, it made him crazy, and in the Julianne Moore film, Hannibal tended to kill "bad people". So, they have made Hannibal into a superhero of sorts vs a mean vicious person.
Dexter has the same deal.
Did you see The Talented Mister Ripley?
I actually read some of the books that's how much I liked that.
He killed people in a calm cool and collected manner because it benefited him. There wasn't a hint that he did it for positive reasons and I like that more than a murderer superhero because it's more realistic. -

Relatives, connections, whoring, producing it…
I think you misunderstand that society is very black pill and that many only care about looks and what looks and feels good more than anything rather than suffering, character, or importance. There are so many people that are so driven by looks and appeal that they don't have any soul and thus what looks good feels good so it doesn't really matter for many what is a good performance or what takes sacrifice rather than it looks cool and is hip. For example the mass produced cgi films that have little to no substance but make millions of dollars but good films with a soul, plot, and great acting get tossed outside to the abyss even if it wins awards.
hahahaha. maybe he is a robot, for all you know. So many plastic surgeries, prosthetics and aesthetics now its days, you never know.
Well, I am so happy you watched Rising, and hope you got your answers there. I feel it's the best of the series. It's so intense, moral, and understanding, more so than the rest. I didn't really get a review from you. I should've gotten a full review. Talking about it has so gotten me in the mood watch it, I'm actually putting Hannibal soon cause they are giving it on tv.
Yea, in some sense the trailer did look like a cheap horror film. You can say it was even panned by Hopkins and for me like for so many the guy looked like an idiot. I don't know why I saw it and really wanted to see it. I think it was all over, despite the trailer you could still see the quality of it which interests me. The feel of the film, vintage with old leather, old settings drawn to me. It was a Hannibal movie so it peaked an interest. I remember it being so panned by so many, it felt like it had to be horrible trash, for so many reasons. So I think what I did was give it a glimpse probably looking to laugh at it and trash it. You know it don't have Hopkins so I was for sure going to hate it. But I don't know why, as soon as I gave it a preview I couldn't stop watching it and liked it. Though Gaspard Looked like an idiot in the trailers, I was heavily surprised how great he played Hannibal, He got the soul of the character so much more, I dare say he played it better than Hopkins. I think trying to reach up to such an iconic character is pretty much impossible. He was an unknown, hadn't done anything before, and sadly since of significance. He could've easily tried to imitate Hopkins which would've felt kinda like disappointing like a wanna be Hannibal but no he did it his way and the final result was impressive. He had so much anger, and zeal for the character. There was so many aspects of him I liked. I never quite understood why he was so hated and why it was so panned. Then it dawned on me. People don't like to see their heros covered by someone else especially if it's not approved and they I found out that many don't like to see their cold psychotic heros with a back story like Heath's Joker. They'd rather have them cold psychotic, giving them a back story makes them intimate and real and it's not something they like. It doesn't fall into their fantasy. In the boards a lot of people did like it. It was just the reviews that panned the **** out of it but smart people on the boards and people that I actually know that have good taste really like it. If I went by the reviews I would've hated it. It was one of the instances that made me realize reviews are trash and you should only go by your views not critics who on many instances like trash and have self-interests by lobbies in liking or hating films.
When I saw Hannibal Rising it was everything I pretty much pictured Hannibal Lecter would be and it answered a lot of questions I had pondered in a logical way. I've read a lot of the books and researched the character but let's face it the movies make them big as the stories are not that well written or as interesting as the films like Hannibal is pretty much Hopkins creation and impressive talent and imagination on creating him. Without him the entire franchise would be nonexistence. They should just pay him more than half the profits.
I'm not so sure you understood the films or the story well. In Silence he was always a Psychiatrist, who played like a psychological cat and mouse game with the killers because as a psychiatrist he saw many of them and knew them before hand but because he was bad and selfish he didn't just give them up to the authorities but rather aided. Being a Doctor, surgeon, and heavily studied like in Rising you can see why he was actually smart and hated stupidity. Though he appeared to kill random people. He never actually did. He always killed for a purpose, usually for revenge or a bad person which sort of made him an anti-hero which is why some people like him. I think in the movies they make him more bad than he really is to vilify him but if you take into account his beginnings you can say he was already ****ed up and you can't really blame him for his actions. A Revisit:
I just saw Hannibal like I said the other day and had more to add. It’s definitely in the scope of a Thriller. There are so many good elements there, so much gross unnecessary violence, and there is the aspect of Romance. Again, The adding of Julianne Moore wasn’t all that bad had they actually gone the right route. Yes Jodie Foster was great and did deserve a comeback but I’m not so sure I prefer her as the actress. She’s a dyke and has other agendas. I dare say Julianne might be better looking, she is taller, red hair, almost slimmer and nicer pale skin. You can say she has flare. Hopkins in the film hints repeatedly at many romances but Clarice resists which is where it goes wrong. The addition of Verger I always found disturbing. There are many good qualities of that character don’t get me wrong. The money, the bounty, the nostalgia of his qualities but did they have to make him so grotesque? And what did his character signify anyway? That Hannibal has fans that hate him and he hates them? I don’t get it. I don’t know if you’ve heard of what I’m going to say next which cheapens Hannibal if you ask me.
There is a theory that there is a supernatural quality of him that makes him surreal, like a God, and in this movie I did see many aspects of that that are implausible. Examples, he goes into the house of the Ray’s just as he leaves, there is no one in the house, nobody notices him go in, he has no way of entry but just opens the door and in he goes. There is a German Sheppard and the Sheppard is afraid of him for no reason. I know German Sheppard’s and that’s just not possible. They’d take Hannibal out just like that. A couple of younger guys have trouble with him and he beats them. Not in real life. He gets captured but somehow this works to his advantage knocking everyone out and taking the girl with him. What world is this? Somehow the Butler for no reason turns on his Master? Then in a matter of minutes he cures Clarice, operates Ray, and calculates every next step perfectly. Is this reality? He has a million cops coming and all he does is escape in seconds unexplainably just in time for a jet with a chopped off hand and there is no issue here. Wtf? So though this theory to me is **** it does make sense which is why I liked the other films better especially Rising because it was more realistic and logical and none of that super human crap. In Hannibal there was so many elements of the conclusive Romance, it was all there but in the end they decided to **** it up. I noticed in the HD Julianne looked older, perhaps they wanted to match up Hopkins with a more mature veteran. It might’ve been frowned upon had he hooked up with a young female fatale. Also they didn’t really use Julianne as well as they could’ve. She is a hot redheaded hottie but instead they just make Hopkins go on and on hinting at his attraction and she just taking it. You can tell she is responsive but up to that. In the end, what the **** was that, she cuffs him and it could’ve been a great ending, they even kissed which I hadn’t remember they went with the a stupid feminist cut off the right hands man. Like wtf for. I think the audience were ready for it and wanted it. Why didn’t they add it??!! Cuz they’re probably homos. Making him escape and not being phased by it. I’m sure if he really wanted to he could’ve broke that without losing his hand and she looked marvelous. That whole ending to me was so disappointing because it could’ve been so beautiful and ground breaking. I would’ve been a huge fan but instead it was such an eyeroll movie of a bin. I think I always liked this movie but it was always so full of disappointments.
