I read somewhere on the Ebert site that Morgan Freeman wanted to play Hannibal Lecter any truth to this?

That's news to me. But I know that Louis Gosset Jr. was considered for the role in the early stages of development. The producers abandoned that idea because they had 2nd thoughts about portraying a black man as a cannibal. So we never got to see "Sgt. Foley" berating Jodie Foster for being a 'country hick pretending to be a grown-up FBI agent" (or however that would have played out).
