i'm talking about the original lyrics for arabian nights when they say "when they cut off your ear if they don't like your face" what was howard ashman thinking of writing i mean this is so violent this can scared the kids good thing they changed it but why did he write that?

Yeah cause the would be it, I am not sure at the time he has still in his battle that he eventually lost with aids. But don't know as he is die and I don't know if he ever wrote why he did. Because by the time Aladdin came out he was already dead. So you can't really ask him, I guess just be glad that they changed the lyrics, but i am not sure if he had thought there would be much harm to it, or the reaction it got.

From what I have researched, Arabic cultures actually do condone the cutting off of one's ears (or nose) as punishment for a crime that was committed or for blasphemy towards the Islamic religion. I heavy doubt Arabs amputate someone's ear "if they don't like your face" unless evidence proves otherwise.

I always thought it was "where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face" but I just read the trivia section and it says the original line was "where they cut off your hand for stealing some bread" I'm confused?
