I think they were less sensitive about underage stuff back then. Things like teacher-student sex you saw a whole lot less criminal charges then, and admins would handle it by just quietly telling the teacher to quit or face charges. Priests who abused kids would still get handed off from diocese to diocese. Now everyone's hypersensitive about that stuff, but it's better than being inattentive to it.
