Did anyone else cry at this film? I think it may have been the first film I cried at!

Why do people get so worked up at that scene? I always thought that was so melodramatic, over-the-top/overwrought and manipulative. Also, why should I get so worked up over a character that we've ever actually seen and presumably, knew the risk going in over being in war (therefore it wasn't like it was a hapless accident)? It's like Penny Marshall just when you get right down to it, wanted to give her daughter at least one big showcase in the movie.

Yeah I also don't get why so many people found that scene sad. It's not like any of the main characters died, or any character that you even see in the entire movie (in that scene).
But I did find the ending sad. Especially with the fact that Dottie left the league after one season and lost contact with everyone, including Kit. It just seems sad to see everyone in their old age and that some of them had died. It's like we never got to truly see their glory years. And that Madonna song at the end did it for me as well.
To say that it's supposed to be ending on a good note, I just found it very sad.

I know that this is going sound callous, but it's extremely naive on Betty's part to not in the back of her mind, think that her husband might die any day he's in battle. So you shouldn't (while you none the less, should be able to grieve and feel said)
            that
            shocked or surprised.

I cry every time I watch it. At various parts of the movie. I think even my dad tears up.. we saw this at the movie theater when it came out.

yeah, I'm a guy, and I get pretty emotional during certain scenes; this film has a great story, and a lot of heart.

I love this movie, but, the telegram scene actually spoils it for me as it wouldn't have happened that way, telegram deliverers would have been trained to be far more tactful, do you really think one would have stood there and said what he did? I know it was meant for effect and it obviously works for some of you, but, I cringe when I see it, it could have been done much better and still had the same effect.

Nurses and Doctors are also trained to be tactful and while most of them are there are some that are just as insensitive as the Western Union man in this.

The telegram guy was a bit over the top, but I can believe there are jerks out there in every form.
Honestly, it was done to make sure that Jimmy was the one to give Betty the telegram and then comfort her. I think it was meant to redeem him for their first encounter, where he tears up the baseball card of her husband's the first time she meets him. He ruins a physical reminder of her husband, but then is able to comfort her and give genuine sympathy after he passes.

For some reason, I get really emotional during this movie. I tear up at the telegram scene, but I also get happy tears when Kit is waving to the crowd at the end of the last game, and again when Kit and Dottie say goodbye, and again at the very end when the picture of the old people fades into the picture of them as young baseball players, and then fades to the black screen with the dedication. I think the music was a big part of it - the score was brilliant and so moving.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time! I always tear up when Betty finds out her husband dies and then I start up again when Racine wins and I pretty much don't stop crying until the movie ends!

I thought I was the only one who cried at this movie. Ive seen it so many times and I cry each time. The ending gets me, cause they make it seem like Dottie and Kit havent seen each other since that last game

Yesterday, for the first time, yes I did at the ending. The way Lynn Cartwright played the older Dottie and the tremendous sense of loss.
