Not just because of that, either. She was a terrific player with great fundamentals, and she never would've had the bal

I think Kit knocked it out of her hand. I don't think Dottie was mentally prepared for Kit to come barreling towards her when she clearly had the ball. It's not something that happens often and the shock and awe at Kit's determination, along with just how HARD she hit her, psyched her out.
Also, I don't think Dottie would have driven ALL the way from Yellowstone park, just to throw the game at the last second. It doesn't make sense.

Anyone who thinks she purposely dropped the ball is both crazy, and has never played sports. The look Dottie gives when she realizes her sister has rounded third is clearly "oh, beep She knows she needs to hang on, and she is determined to do so. Just as much as Kit is determined to knock her down. Neither sister gave either any quarterthat's what makes the ending so poignant. Kit earned it. And Dottie respected it. Because she loved her little sister
Why is this so hard to understand?? -

Yeah and not to mention right before that she went over to the pitcher and gave her that tip about how she can't lay off the high ones. Somebody that didn't want to win wouldn't have done that. But I can see it from both sides.

This is a big point.. if they pitched three high fast balls and Kit strikes out Game over!
Dottie gets the win.. Kit has a breakdown and cries as Dottie says "Kit, there is no crying in Baseball!" as she and Jimmy celebrate the victory with Jimmy kissing Dottie but they break up the embrace before her husband notices.. Jump to the end of the movie when Dottie is at the reunion and seems Jimmy there.. he never married and she was now a widow.. with the end of the movie with Jimmy asking Dottie "Let's go watch a game" as they leave hand in hand.. both in love and in love with baseball. the montage of the players playing at the end continues over the credits no one cares what happen to Kit -

Kit earned it. And Dottie respected it.
And if Kit hadn't earned it fair-and-square, if Dottie had thrown the game, then Dottie never could have respected it (not to mention that she never could have looked any of the other Peaches in the eye if she hadn't given an honest effort). And it wouldn't have taken Kit too terribly long to pick up on that.
In some ways Dottie comes across as a very Howard-Hawksian character: it's all about competence and ability to perform with her. Heck, Jimmy was a Hall-of-Famer and she still had absolutely no respect for him until he demonstrated that he could do his current job competently. (I loved the "Well, then act like it, you big lush" line.) -

I like to think Kit did that all on her own, without sympathy from her sister. Dottie was always taking care of her and babying her, kit always felt inferior.
I think Dottie really wanted to win the game and didnt drop it on purpose. In that moment kit won fair and square..she went from low self Esteem crybaby to a woman with determination and confidence..she had a strong will to win and did so all on her own.
I think it shocked Dottie that Kit stepped up like that but ultimately she was proud and happy that her sister finally got her moment to shine.
Kit waited her whole life for that moment, and I like to believe she gained the strength to win all on her own.
Kit's whole life seemed to completely change because of that moment,,she was no longer in Dottie's shadow and made her own life. -

I think that Dottie returned to play ball and was determined to win at all costs .. but then, near the end, she looked over and saw Kit in the dugout .. she saw a person who had been totally devastated .. who had totally broken down and given up .. i think that struck her to the marrow to see that it was her own sister there like that, and in an instant, she knew what she had to do .. i think that her letting that ball roll from her hand, was in her mind, a small price to pay to have her sister whole again .. i doubt that what she was doing to her teammates and fans of the team, ever even occurred to her .. her whole world at that time, was all about her and her sister..

I think one of the things people are missing, Dottie was aware of Kit's selfish and bratty behavior, in fact Dottie was fed up with it by that point, that's why she stopped going easy on her. At the end, when it was Kit's turn to bat, Dottie told the pitcher (Ellen) to expose her weakness, basically setting Kit up for defeat, but also challenging her. When she saw Kit was finally able to hit a pitch she could never hit before (fast high ball), that's basically when Dottie surrenders because she was satisfied in pushing her and bringing out a side of Kit that she hasn't seen before. Kit thanks her later, and apologizes for hurting Dottie's shoulder in the moment. Dottie was happy for her, because she knows that's all that Kit ever wanted, not to necessarily be the best, but to finally be more than the shadow of her older and more talented sister.
Dottie did do the right thing technically, yeah she lost the game for her team, but she never cared for the game in the first place, her personal life mattered more. If she had won the game, she herself would not be happy, and her relationship with her sister would of been destroyed. -

I can't believe people are actually debating this. Lol. This has been my favorite movie all my life and I've seen it a million times. Dottie most definitely dropped the ball on purpose for Kit to win. Everything that happens in the movie foreshadows that fact. It's not left open to interpretation. Dottie threw the game for Kit and it always pissed me off because it hurt her teammates, but it wasn't out of character. Dottie didn't care. When she went back to play in the WS she most likely did plan to win, but in that last play when Kit hit the high fast ball, Dottie decided not to completely break her sister. This is not an interpretation. It's the way the movie was written.
You, OP, are absolutely right and anyone saying different just believe it because they want to believe it. Dottie threw the game, bottom line.
