I agree with you completely.
Part of what I LOVE about this movie is how he KNOWS it's herit's not about just sex, though they imply the sex is great (to prove there's no lacking in that departmentto prove he loves her SOUL).
"Never, never to be squanderedthe miracle of another human being"
The fact that he kissed a man that he knew held HER SOUL
The fact that he wanted nothing to do with the gorgeous body that DIDN'T hold her soul.
This movie would be crap without that message.
It's what MAKES it for me.
He paid attention to who she WAS and he LOVED it.good or bad or weird or whatever
Still, as an artist and as someone who has acted, I look upon the task of taking that ON and making it WORKit is formidable.
Aagh; you're a HEDGE! -

The 1st time I watched this movie, I wasn't crazy about it. But now I've seen it 2 more times, & everytime I do, it makes me think more about relationships & caring about someone else, etc. I think it must have been very hard to act (without OVERACTING) like an old man or a young woman. I think it is a much better film than many people on here seem to think. Maybe it is too deep for them?

A major point or theme of the movie seems to have been missed here.
This movie was written by a gay man. I rmember reading somehwere, that part of what he was trying to achieve is to make a non-gay audience understand or at least appreciate what goes into an attraction between two men. For better or worse, there is a gay agenda for this movie. Both the director and writer were gay men (the director has died from AIDs complication so I used past tense).
So when Alec Baldwin kisses the Old Man, we as the audience are intended to identify with what he is feeling in bringing himself to make that kiss, and to see that love and even attraction can transcend the bodies that we find ourselves in, even if the two bodies in question are same sex. -
