Bruce Wayne/ Batman: Mel Gibson or Alec Baldwin (I'm a huge Michael Keaton fan, but his version of Batman wouldn't really work in this movie)
Andrea Beaumont/ The Phantasm: Rene Russo or Catherine Zeta-Jones
Arthur Reeves: Kevin Spacey
Carl Beaumont: Robert Redford
The Joker: Willem Dafoe
Alfred: Anthony Hopkins
Commissioner James Gordon: William H. Macy

Bruce Wayne/ Batman: Ben Affleck or Hugh Jackman (assuming he never played Wolverine)
Andrea Beaumont/ The Phantasm: Jessica Chastain or Jennifer Garner

The Joker: Tom Hiddleston (assuming he never played Loki) or Hugo Weaving
Alfred: Michael Caine (Sorry, just can't see anyone else in the role)

I really love these choices longi-2. The only one I'm not so sure about is Chastain for Andrea Beaumont, mainly because Chastain is my favourite actress at the moment but I think she tends to excel a playing more down-to-earth characters with a sensible head on their shoulders than Beaumont who is ultimately revealed to be a mentally unstable rich girl. I'd prefer to see Chastain play Batgirl/The Oracle or even Poison Ivy (who starts off as a shy nerd before becoming as complete nutter).
Okay, this is my hypothetical cast for 1993:
Bruce Wayne/Batman- Alec Baldwin (Gibson would be my second choice, although he's not very tall and in retrospect it's probably a good thing he wasn't cast as Batman in view of the controversy he's since attracted)
Andrea Beaumont/The Phantasm - Jeanne Tripplehorn (Robin Wright as a secondary choice)
The Joker - Willem Dafoe
Alfred Pennyworth - John Hillerman
Commissioner James Gordon - Tom Skerritt
Carl Beaumont - Cliff Robertson (Tom Selleck is a great choice for a present day version of the film, although I've always thought he'd be a perfect choice for
Thomas Wayne
in flashbacks)
Arthur Reeves - John Cusack

For the Joker, I would go with Alan Cumming. I also Richard Gere as an alternate Carl Beaumont. Rachel McAdams would be a great Andrea.

I'll have to give it some thought.
I have considered alternative Batman casts over the various decades from the 30s onwards before but I might to rethink them.
I'd love to get your thoughts on casting a live-action B:MOTP for the 70s and 80s but even more interesting would be a hypothetical cast for the entire Batman: The Animated Series cast encompassing all the Rogues' Gallery and key supporting characters.
