I kinda have a Love/Hate thing with Nicole Kidman. In Malice i loved her, and other films like The Others and Moulin Rouge, but then other times, i really dont like her, Her latest film choices are pretty poor (Australia, Nine, The Golden Compass)Dont get me wrong, shes a good actress but, im not sure

I agree - I don't think she's great in everything, but really liked her in this.

The only film I've seen her in where she really disappointed me was "Australia". The mousy look, the embarrassing attempts at humour, all fell flat. But then, I suspect that all this was as much the director's doing as it was hers. I thought her portrayal of that cold, menacing woman in "The Golden Compass" was superb - with just a look, or a word tinged with ice, she made it plain that she was not someone to be messed with.

All of this "I like her," "I don't like her" is pretty silly. Most actors are good in some movies, less so in others. There are about as many reasons for this as there are names in a film's credits. Sometimes an excellent actor is badly directed. Some actors rise above poor direction. Some scripts are crap and nothing can be done to save them. Some actors have a chameleonic quality, allowing them to disappear in a role. Others (and there are more of these) are always themselves, no matter what role they are playing. An example of the latter is Tom Cruise. Examples of the former would include Rod Steiger, Jude Law (compare performances/appearances in "Road to Perdition" vs. "The Talented Mr. Ripley." Does this mean Jude Law is God's gift to acting? No. For a less than brilliant performance of his, see him attempt to portray Errol Flynn in "The Aviator." We all have our good and less-than-good days at work. In the case of actors, it's preserved for all time to induce either ridicule or admiration. And it's worth remembering that public opinion is just that. We bring a great deal of ourselves to each viewing, and few of us are truly objective in our evaluations. Thus it's more accurate to say, "I didn't like that film," or "I really enjoyed that film," than to say who we do or don't like. And hopefully, we'll be speaking to someone who actually gives a damn when we do.

Enjoyed your post. Can't say I am a fan, but thought she was great in "To Die For".

I disagree entirely. There are few actors who are unequal in films. Some generally make excellent choices and some generally make bad choices. Now what constitutes good and bad is of course entirely relative. Take Rachel Weisz, she consistently chooses excellent films. But they aren't usually "blockbuster" style. Nicole Kidman is generally more Blockbuster style, who makes occasional excursions at wannabe independent films, but in my book, she fails entirely at both styles. Or take Nicholas Cage, in the past you could count on him for interesting roles, but in the last decade plus, he has consistently offered very crappy characters with much Hollywood appeal. I find that I can trust most actors when it comes to choosing films. I can trust Nicole Kidman to be in poor films this was the least crappy of her films.

Agreed, the constant gaping mouth is so stupid looking. But at least in this flick she had not yet perfected the strained skinny biatch look she now cultivates which is beyond hard to look at, aarrrggh.

Kidman was effective enough here. And "not that her appearences are better now"? She's outstanding in The Others and The Hours & non too shabby in Eyes Wide Shut.

I actually thought she was great in Eyes Wide Shut. The scene in which Tom Cruise
reveals his participation in the orgy to her near the end
, there's so much emotion in her face and so much etched in her mind that it's aching and exhausting to look at. Great acting.
