Just an off-topic question, I guess. But exactly what year is this movie set in? 1930? Thanks.

It's set over a number of years between the 1930s and 1950s. The flashbacks detail the lead up to the second world war. The "present day" storyline of Stevens driving to the west country to meet Miss Kenton and ask her to return to Darlington Hall is in the 1950s.

On his desk it shows Wednesday Oct 25that only fits 1933. Later when the PM and German Foreign Minister are there, they discuss Czechoslovakia and its annexation1938 for certain.
