I agree. I rewatched both recently and the first one didn't hold up well. There are some good gags, but it labors too heavily on the plot. Plus, as much as I like Rob Lowe in dramas and dramedy (The West Wing), he's just not good in comedy. Very bad in Tommy Boy as well.
The second movie just goes for broke and is unabashedly silly and absurd. I think the success of the first movie allowed Mike Myers to just do whatever he wanted. The result is a less disciplined but far funnier and more inventive film. Plus I think the director handled comedy better than Penelope Spheeris.

Though I consider both 8/10 IMHO, I must admit I liked the sequel more myself.

there is alot of buzz on this board about liking the sequel better, that actually happens think about it, "addams family values". farley steals every scene he's in, i dont know how he does it. the two waynes world movies always air together, so i can't say really what happens in which, but i have actually gotten hooked on all the catch phrases. i find it funny that the plot i read describes them being teenagers, so i guess the girls around them are in their 20s and 30s, the girls can't be teens i figure since marriage is involved in the story.
in the darkened sky black birds fly,
sign of death and upcoming heartache times,
the sunny times i had, can't believe its the same street,
all transformed since you were here with me,
but i got to keep roaming through these eerie days,
until the lord calls me away,
though youre no longer in these arms of mine,
through the years i hold you close in mind,
in a painting of magical times,
before the sun went out of the sky,
where these black birds circle around.

They were 20 something. They seemed like a couple of early to mid 20 year olds to me.

As a kid, I sort of liked the original, but I didn't totally "get it." 2 didn't seem quite as good, but I watched it more and found myself quoting it more than the original. Strange.

Ah yes, it's a lot like Star Trek: The Next Generation. In many ways it's superior but will never be as recognized as the original.
Point them with the sticky end.

It's like people only do these things because they can get paid. And that's just really sad
