Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Dolores Claiborne

I remember watching it with my parents when I was a young kid I was mature for my age and precocious and for whatever other reasons they allowed me to watch it, and it's a movie that I've never forgotten. As I watched it again when I was older, I was able to pick up on the incest subplot which I didn't understand when I was ten years old, but every time I watch the film I'm always taken aback by it.
It's beautifully acted, but it's also visually amazing. There are so many images in the film that are unforgettable.
I'm surprised that this film among all of the Stephen King adaptations seems to be one that gets less discussion than mostmaybe because it's not an outright horror story (though there are some convincing arguments of it being a horror film)? I just kind of find it baffling. It may be one of my favorite movies of all time.

I think this film was overlooked because people assumed it was another "Misery." Nothing could be further from the truth. It's one of the best movies (if not the best) of Bates' career. It deserves the Blu ray treatment asap!

It was Bates best of her career. Judy Parfitt as Vera Donovan was excellent and David Strathairn convinced the viewer that he needed to be killed. Perhaps the title was not
catchy enough to make TV viewers click on it or the movie goer to select. Whatever the reason the fact is most people have not seen the movie.

This is arguably the best adaptation of any of Stephen King's stories. In fact it's a brilliant movie that totally involves you in the story and makes you believe in all the characters. It deserves far more praise than it gets.

It is my favourite of King’s novels. I think I read it after seeing the film on vhs mid 90’s. Have re-read several times since.
I was surprised that the film had fleshed out Selena’s character from the book, but both film and novel are exceptional within their own medium. They are both thematically strong with a similar message. Forgiveness is stronger in the film.

I agree. I read the book first, then watched the movie when it came out. Both outstanding.

Did you recall having any expectations for the film? You may not have anticipated the changes made.

No expectations at all because usually the adaptations of his works haven’t been that good. I was very pleasantly surprised how well it was done, even though it did depart in some facets from the book. One of my favorite adaptations. Shawshank deviated from the novella, but was also done very well. The Stand departed from the novel, and aside from great cinematography and score, it was, IMO, really bad. I tend to look at adaptations as standalones and try not to compare them to the books.
