Well, you have to consider that television was a new medium then . People were still recovering from WW2. They believed that these game shows were legit. That made it exciting to them. When it came out that it was all rigged, it was hard to know who or what to trust.
Watching this movie, I think I felt the most sympathy for the elder Van Dorens. Charles came from a distinguished academic background. To have lied to the world, but especially to his family was such a blow.

Ah the 1950s! I was only in my thirties back then and women and non whites didn't have the rights they do today. Good times.
