Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Nowhere Man

    Triopstor — 17 years ago(October 16, 2008 01:42 AM)

In the final episode of Season 1 and possibly the last of the Nowhere Man series in any form.
Tom asks the question of "Why am I so important to you guys?" to FBI Assistant Director Barton. Doesn't seem like a shocking question till you consider the context. The context being: Firstly, project Gemini was to re-wash a man to a new identity called "Thomas Veil" and then make his life difficult to see if this would help in his reconditioning process. Secondly, as part of the project he was to participate in a REAL war game of "cat & mouse" where he was given clues in a form of a photogragh refered to as "Hidden Agenda". See if he could find out any sources and the truth regarding 4 dead & replaced duplicate Senators. This would help secure any leaks for "Them". Thirdly, to test the limits of true beliefs vs. implanted beliefs.
So now in context it seems logically that "Tom Veil"(not his real name) knows it all. So now he asks the question "Why am I so important to you guys?" The apparent FBI mole Barton is a bit peeved by the question. So he replies "Come on Veil your 2 moves from check mate."
Now this begs the real challenging question what are the 2 moves to check mate?
Of another curious detail, earlier Tom says "I never was an operative. So fill in the details." Barton chuckles twice and is amused by that statement. And earlier when Tom commands, "Tell me about Gemini. He was on the verge of exposing the whole thing. That's why he was dangerous to you". Barton chuckles and is strongly amused by that statement. "You got things a little turned around. He (Gemini) knew even less than you do (Tom)"
One very logical and shocking possibility was that Gemini was conditioned to infiltrate the FBI as a mole being originally a "an average person" and then "ironically" working to investigate & pursue "Them". Which would really fool the FBI as such classic stings are found in the television series "Mission Impossible".
Which perhaps might be the opposite of Jenny Shue an FBI agent re-conditioned as an assasin. Or was Jenny Shue like Tom, conditioned to infiltrate the FBI too. Maybe this how "Them" expanded resources so quickly. They abduct homeless people or potentials and re-condition them to be hidden flags in various organizations around the U.S. and to a smaller part around the globe. That would be a dangerous power.
However there is a strong clue that such was not the case of Tom re-conditioned to infiltrate the FBI as Alexander Hale said, "No wonder they errased and re-conditioned you (Tom)." Meaning Tom originally was a good agent for the FBI working on project Marathon.
    THERE ARE 2 POSSIBLE ANSWERS

I view only two possible answers to the question of "Come on Veil your 2 moves from check mate."

    1. Tom can bring down the whole operation in 2 moves.
    2. Barton is just saying he is 2 moves from understanding his total purpose.
      Let's analyse both.
    3. Is likely false as earlier Barton says "This is just one little
operation Veil. You won't be able to change anything." And I agree. As
said ealier in the series "To whom shall we turn them into? They are the
authorities Tom."(paraphased). We are told over and over again that "Them"
are too big of an organization to be destroyed in one eagle swoop. Even the
traitor Alexander Hale in their midst said, "I'm going to take them down
Tom. One by one if I have too." Implies a lengthly process. Even the
traitor was foolish and blinded by zeal or anger. He didn't last long
before being suspected, caught and eliminated.
    4. FBI Assistant-Director Robman knew Gemini was an FBI agent. He knew of
Tom's pictures in the vault at the bank. And he was initially distrustful
of Tom on a few occasions such as not wanted to bring Tom to the enemy
safehouse where the video was taped. Tom's purpose is to prove the mind
control experiments work to further "Them"'s operations. And that Tom
maybe useful as an unwitting tool to disinform the FBI. Most
likely by another brain washing session. There was one episode where "Them"
needed Tom to be re-conditioned again and it had to be done within 7 days
or some such tight time frame but Tom escaped with help. Logically "Them"
needed him fast for some secret sur-VEIL-lance. As in Robman's own
words "Don't your realise I can't trust my own people." Ironic if Tom were
to be turned as Jenny Shue was hypnotised.
THE 2 REMAINING MOVES TO A CHECK MATE:
    5. We re-conditioned you Tom so we kept you alive and in surVEILlance. Veil =
      a garment that conceals the face(intentions) & head(the organization).
    6. We took you off the map from the FBI because you got too close on the FBI
operation Marathon to expose us. So we had you erased & re-conditioned to
our project Gemini. But as we can tamper your mind and others too we can
do it again for our purposes. I mean Tom? We had you fooled. As Barton
mentioned in a paraphrased summary, "Can't you put it all together Tom?
      Project Gemini is the

It seems like you're overcomplicating this. It was always my impression that, as Barton says, Tom IS Gemini, the FBI agent who was investigating their operations. They caught him, drugged him & brainwashed him to live under this new identity, "Thomas Veil", then took it away from him to reinforce it. Thomas probably is his real first name. The "2 moves from checkmate" thing probably just means that he's almost figured out what's going on (which he does by the end of the episode).

        PART 1 RESPONSE

"It seems like you're overcomplicating this. It was always my impression that, as Barton says, Tom IS Gemini, the FBI agent who was investigating their operations."
I disagree. You didn't read my post very well.
        As I wrote earlier
"However there is a strong clue that such was not the case of Tom re-conditioned to infiltrate the FBI as Alexander Hale said, "No wonder they erased and re-conditioned you (Tom)." Meaning Tom originally was a good agent for the FBI w
        orking on project Marathon."
We must base the case on the evidence & statements presented by the parties.
        PART 2 RESPONSE

The "2 moves from checkmate" thing probably just means that he's almost figured out what's going on (which he does by the end of the episode).
I have three problems with that.

        1. "probably just means". I'm trying to get to the definite answers not probably or possibly. We may start off the investigation of possibilities but
then try pin this down to a conclusion. A person can't have answers based upon probably or possibly. In English probably or possibly can also mean it did not occur that way.
        2. Again to the evidence and statements provided by the characters we must
look at although statements from characters are not always accurate and could
          be deception.
        3. In the game of chess a check mate is game over not "figured out what's going
on". And if that is such the case its that he's figured it out I provided that analysis in my first post.

I think you're overthinking this as well.
And "two moves from checkmate" could also be intended to tell Tom it is all for nothing as HE (Tom) is two moves from losing no matter what he does. I mean, while he has found out a good portion of what is going on at the end, he is still alone with no allies and no one to trust. Who knows how high in the government their control goes, so even if he DID reveal all the information to someone, it likely wouldn't matter and would be covered up. It all seems quite hopeless by the end.they control large portions of the government and police force, not to mention they can replace anyone they want at a moment's notice..
