Reviving this old thread. Rewatched this movie over the weekend, and I also watched it nearly 20 years ago in the theaters too.
For those of us who was Max's age or thereabouts, Max's focus on Roxanne was HANDS DOWN the absolute most relatable plot and story (and accompanying character motivations) that Disney released during the 1990s. I think the reason why so many people (and this is not a coincidence, there's countless anecdotes, personal stories, myself included, of people loving A Goofy Movie as an underrated classic) love this movie with such zeal is because of the incredibly special accomplishment of the creators being able to portray such a specific experience with such
universal emotional content.
Max's aspirations and emotions towards Roxanne hit incredibly close to home to countless number of young boys, and Roxanne was also a rare, and beautifully balanced creation of cuteness, beauty, sweetness and teen heartthrob that represented all the things we wished for a first REAL girlfriend as a teenager. Who, as a teenaged boy (or girl), didn't want to make a splash in High School and impress the crush of their dreams and be the hero? The antics that got there were crazy, but the motivation wasn't, and it made a lot of us feel like we could do it too!
And like the rest of you, as a grown man who has moved past such emotional experiences, the movie still speaks volumes to me. Roxanne is officially my favorite "Disney" girl of the last 20 years, despite not being an official Disney girl. -

I know right?
Even at 8 it struck me how cute she was. I would be as tongue tied as Max around her.
I'm not a furry but that nose, that hair, that mole. They just made a girl that you can see as being an obsession.
Also, even without much screen time you can see she's so nice. She has some type of depth and is both popular and agreeable.
Would I do her?
I think I would if she didn't have fur.
