Why did they need Gene to kill the governor? It seems to me they could have saved quite a bit of time and effort if her husband just killed her in the middle of the night. Was it just so they could frame Gene in the end? (which would have just led to him going to jail anyway and not seeing his daughter anymore) Thanks.
P.S. Though Johnny Depp had a great performance in this flick like in all his movies.I thought that the bus boy (the guy that played Bob in all those Seinfelds) had the most stunning and wonderful performance.(He looked so frightened!) haha. -

I think they wanted Gene to do it so he would be blamed for the crime. Even though he would tell the police people made him do this, no one would believe him because everyone was in on it. Her husband didn't want to go to jail, so he hired Christopher Walken to get someone to do it for him.

They were going to shoot Gene after he shot the governor, so he wouldn't be able to tell his story anyway
Exactly right. Walken's character might have even done it and then been a hero. No one would ever know why this accountant went nuts and decided to kill the Governor. His little girl wouldn't be able to tell them anything useful, assuming she survived.
That, btw, is why Walken's character followed Gene around so closely. This wasn't a send-in-an-assassin-while-we-wait-safely-at-home scenario. Walken's character could have been standing right next to Gene when Gene fired the gun, and no one would suspect him. They didn't even know each other. So he herded Gene around, making sure he didn't get help, right up to the end. Then he would have shot Gene so no one would know. -

Towards the end of the movie one of the guys said to christopher walken something like- we had it all set up, a high powered rifle and a quick shot, but you had to go and get creative. That's the reason gene was found to perform the task, CREATIVITY!
Awesome movie! -

->At one point, Walken's character even mentions that Depp would have been seen all over the cameras. Presumably, he would know that he (Walken) would be on the cameras as well.
True, but he could easily explain it by saying that Depp's character made him wonder, so that's why he was following him around.
Again, since he was going to kill him afterwards, who's to say what they were talking about?? -

The cameras in question belonged to the Oriental couple who were in on the plot. They were probably instructed to make sure Mr. Smith didn't show up on film and raise suspicion. Still raises the question of a couple dozen witnesses who saw the two of them talking though.
