It was indeed absinthe. It's identified as such in Christopher Hampton's published screenplay.

Well I saw a couple of people already answer the question but I mean did any of you ever drink it? I don't mean to brag just trying to say that it is a normal kind of alcohol(well as normal as you can get with 70%alcohol in it) it doesn't cause hallucinations but it does get you drunk in a very small amount of time:-)

I drink it 😉 here in Italy, Absinth is illegal, so I bought it on the Web, particulary from Spain. It's very strong and excellent for getting drunk, but it doesn't cause hallucinations, unless you mix it with a little (LITTLE) of hashish (NOT with other drugs, its very dangerous!). Obviously, if someone want to try this, be carefull!!!

Absinthe is great! I would reccommend it to anyone (who is of legal age to drink alcohol!)
One word of warning though - this caught me out! It makes your poo green. I thought I had rotted my insides, but no. Just crapping green!

Absinthe (the original drink) did in fact cause hallucinations because of things/chemicals they put into it. They often times poured it over a sugar cube to cut the bitterness. Todays version is just alcohol that is green and will not cause hallucinations.

I first tried absinthe (an authentic replica of the original Pernod recipe) years ago. Absinthe made with wormwood, one of the main herbs used in traditional absinthe, gives me a different intoxication effect than regular alcohol. Wormwood and its interaction with the other herbs used in absinthe can cause different, fairly subtle, effects on top of the powerful alcohol content. Sadly, no hallucinations, no fees vertes, but an interesting experience.
