Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Tremors II: Aftershocks

    immortal005 — 17 years ago(August 23, 2008 05:11 PM)

I'm a huge Tremors fan and was excited as hell when patr2 came out back in the mid 90s and was very pleasantly surprised that I liked it almost as much as the original. That said, this was the first time I ever saw MREs take sort of a center stage role in a movie. I had never really seen what MREs looked like; just heard of them. Then the shriekers eat all the MREs(and earlier Burt was all talking a bout how great they are). Anyway, after this movie was over, I just had this desire to eat them. how about you?
And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.

Yeah I had a buddy in the National Guard he gave me a couple of MREs to try. They taste like dog taint.

I had the same urge. Apparently they are actually good if you get the right ones.

I had the same desire. But then again, I like microwavable cheeseburgers and watching Ravenous made me want to run out and make home-made stew. So, you know. I might not be all that "typical."

Years ago, I had some MREs that were given out by a local church after hurricane Katrina hit and everyone's food went bad (the electricity went out, so refrigerators and freezers stopped working). They're fairly tasty and have all the nutrition and carbohydrates anyone could need. They even come with plastic bags that, when water is put in them, get hot to heat the food up. In cases of emergency or in rigorous conditions, MREs are very good to have on hand.
Courage, men! we've not sunk before, and we'll not sink now!

Maybe they've gotten better in recent years, but in the early 90's I went on a field trip to Fort Hood and they gave us some MREs. Not as a meal, we got to eat in some officers mess hall, they just gave them to us as souvenirs. I'm sure they'd be great to have in the middle of a war or natural disaster, but not something I've ever had an "urge" to put in my mouth again. But as a result I found the MRE jokes pretty funny when I saw Tremors II several years later.

I'm not gonna lie, seeing so many MRE's in this movie really made me want to try one, although I have no doubt that it wouldn't live up to the hype. I've heard from friends in the military that MRE's have definitely gotten better in years, although they'd still prefer an actual meal to an MRE. Supposedly the spaghetti MRE is the best one (or most preferred one) because it's the MRE that's closest to eating actual thing, which in that case is spaghetti.
I have heard of the thing where you add water to it and it makes the food hot, and I can't speak for how it tastes (I've never had MRE's myself) but I sure as hell wanna see that happen! On a side note, I've read that MRE's produced in the former USSR can last for up to 70 years, so I can only wonder what that does to the taste. But at the end of the day, MRE's are supposed to be very convenient in the field, so tasting good is more of a bonus (granted the taste is getting better).
As a kid I never wanted to try MRE's, although I did really want to try astronaut food. Eventually I did get to try astronaut ice cream, but it ended up being like eating a giant marshmellow from Lucky Charm's. I know astronaut food and MRE's are different but I can only imagine the letdown would be similar.
Can't be too careful with all those weirdos running around.

                      Those weren't MRE's
I'm genuinely convinced that every movie would be better with Arnold Schwarzenegger in it.
