@coutterhill - weird, in the past few days I've watched Battlefield Earth and The Postman for the first time, rewatching Waterworld now - taking a break to see why it was ragged on, I love it - enjoyed those other two films as well, BE took a right undeserved beating. Shame.

I've always thought it was much better than it's ratings also.
There were soo many total crapp movies in the '80's-90's. I'm guessing it partly has to do with the big budget. People were expecting it to be the greatest movie of all time. Something that would rival Blade Runner and the Terminator movies. I like the story and the visuals, and the acting isn't bad either.

Yeah, but that was back in the day. The question is, how come this movie is still so underrated, when all the hype had already worn off?
This movie definitely deserves a higher rating - 7/10 at least.

Yeah, I watched this movie for the first time in years and thought it was thoroughly enjoyable. It's The Road Warrior meets Pirates of the Caribbean, you know?

I never did understand why it was panned so hard. I think it was because the budget at the time was so huge that expectations were high. It's one of those movies that I'll watch any time it comes on t.v. I don't care what anyone says - it's a good film!

Duly noted. Great film. Not fantastic, but most definitely not the pile of drivel that most critics and their ilk made it out to be.

I watched it for the first time about 10 years after its release, and I wondered, "WTH? Why didn't I watch this earlier?" It was definitely due to bad press/word-of-mouth at and following the time of its release.
When I'm in the mood for a good post-apocalyptic film, I think of this one, Mad Max/Road Warrior, and very few others as the perfect ones to fulfill my current need. I Am Legend and 28 Days are my favorite new-age apocalyptic sagas.
Waterworld is a definite, solid installment in doomsday theater. Thought it should at least be a 6.5 or 7 out of 10 stars.

I love movies. And I think that this movie is really great. First time I saw it, I couldn't understand the plot, but on my second view I decided that this was going to be my favorite movie.
My big dream in life is to see Waterworld 2.

Because Waterworld is one of the worst movies ever made. The acting, the dialogue, the special effects, ug! Everything in the movie was just terrible.

I personally believe it's envy. Keven Costner wowed everyone with "Dances with Wolves" winning a box of oscars and other awards. He snubbed Hollywood by trying to do it again by himself so they all thumbed their noses at him. They seemed to do the same thing to Mel Gibson because of "Braveheart".
ps. I'm no film expert and this is just an opinion. So others reading this please spare me the condescending, elitist, snotty responses full of arcane minutia. I'm just curious as to what others think.

Correct that statement that KC snubbed Hollywood. That is not the truth. No one works harder at a project than Kevin Costner. He won Oscars and Golden Globes and deserved them. Sorry about the preaching, I cannot even begin to repeat the line you rattled off about yada yada yada. You got my opinion. Period.

Haha 😄 I grew up loving Waterworld, never knowing of all the hate people had for the film. In my childhood world this was the first film that topped Star Wars! I still don't understand why people hate it so intensely but I guess I'm biassed as hell!

I love this movie and watch it every 1-2 years and I just love to leave our boring world into a fantastical waterworld.

this is how i felt after seeing it in the 90's.. it was considered a joke of a film, so i always thought i was alone.
