I've always wondered what the aesthetic direction was for this film If 'Blade Runner' was cyberpunk, then 'Waterworld' would be Dieselpunk? Aquapunk? Navalpunk? Due to its post-apocalyptic, tribal, survivalist feel, with a mechanical aspect.

I would say it was pitched as The Road Warrior except on water instead of desert. The cyberpunk style is more metaphysical with technology interfacing with human minds or thinking for itself. Neuromancer is a good read if you're into that.
