If you're one of those people who can't turn off their brain or their moral gauge when viewing this movie, simply put it just isn't for you.
Otherwise, it's an excellent movie jam-packed with laughs (I laughed the whole way through).
I get the feeling the only reason this movie was bashed was because too many people were stuck up and expecting a sophisticated comedy or something.

How in the world would anyone attach "sophisticated" and "pauly shore"? The weeeeeesel is never gonna be that.

Don't sweat it bro, whenever you read on here someone bashing the movie, all they can say is it's "bad", "stupid" or similar without a shred of specific inightful critique, hence they just don't get it, and probably did not watch the movie all the way through.
I used to do stand-up comedy and I can tell you the "set" or mindset of the audience is crucial you can tell the same joke the same way one 2 different nights and get completely different reactions. People have a bad day or just plain hate. It makes them feel good, but I can tell you it feels better to laugh.
I would differ with you on the "turn off" part: the script is actually quite involved, slyly slipping in various environmental information. For example, the scene with fish farming married to rice cultivation: this is actually a low-impact self-contained food system and well-known to people who study that type of thing.
