I want to say werewolves but I'm not really sure because I also thought they seemed like some kind of just weird beasts? Does anybody have any ideas of what these were?

I thought the implication was that these were somehow the eternal (or something) cannibals from the story in the beginning. But I guess that doesn't make much sense, since they were still on their way to the caverns when attacked. I just always assumed that was who the critters were meant to be, though.

They were some creatures that inhabited those woods for many years, who knows what they are, another post said crow men, but I doubt it, since the guy who tells them about the crow was just saying that crows only squawk at night when they're disturbed, implying something up in the trees is disturbing them.
I'd say they were the things that attacked the men who "survived by eating 9 others" I don't think they resorted to cannibalism, my theory is the couple were attacked by whatever killed the lost 12, and history went down as police nabbing the 3 survivors, and realizing they're "delusional" talking about creatures and other crazy shht, so now in the same woods they're being harrassed by creatures that can climb the treeline, and eat it's pray in minutes, sounds like the same creatures.
Another theory could be that once those guys resorted to cannibalism, IF they had resorted anyway, then maybe they turned into mountain boy cannibals, who would wonder the woods, finding travellers and then murdering and eating them, but if that were to be believed, that doesn't account for them being alive for so long, maybe they're the descendents? But even then I don't see how hungry, crazed, psychotic human beings could holster the ability to climb trees and go from tree top to tree top, being able to strip a full human body down in seconds, deboneing and skinning on the spot.
Even another theory is that they were possessed by a wendigo, that their act in the fit of survival, turned them into creatures of the night, given powers by the wendigo they're forced to hunt through the dark night, killing who they can to feed his thirst, feed his hunger, feed him with every ripping, gouging, biting manner they can. Maybe in trade of being a wendigo's tool for hunting they're given eternal life but with this they do nothing anymore but hunt for The Wendigo.
I honestly don't know what they are, thinking about it is fun though maybe they're just some ambiguous creatures, but through the ambiguity came intrigue, gotta give props for that -

The guy who said they were "crow men" wasn't just digging that term out of his rearthat's the name their characters are credited as in the credits.
