This has always been one of the most disappointing movies ever to me. I saw it in theaters when I was a teenager, and I wanted to love it. I am a big fan of fantasy books and movies, so I was very excited.
It has some good aspects: the score is amazing, the CGI is very well done, especially for the time, and the basic plot is good. But it didn't come together for a good film. This is what's so disappointing. It was so close to being great, but it fell short. I like Dennis Quaid, but he felt out of place here. The other actors were OK, but nothing special. The main problem was that it felt rushed and too focused on the cool CGI. They needed to spend more time on the story and making it feel real. Give us more info about the world and this kingdom. Go into more detail, rather than leaving it shallow. The training of the villagers and the battle just felt cheesy and made-for-TV. Ultimately that's how the whole movie came out: kind of cheesy and with a made-for-TV feel.
The reason this is so disappointing is that there are so few really good fantasy movies, especially ones with dragons. When there's one that has a big budget and some really good aspects, it's frustrating when it still fails, especially because this kind of thing only makes studios more reluctant to put much money towards movies like this.

      DragonHeart
      really
      could have been
      a lot
better if Universal hadn't butted in with their bad ideas and messed it up just to be more "hip and current." Doing things like casting American actors in a film set in Medieval Europe (like no one would notice), and dumbing down the praised screenplay just to make the movie family-friendly.
The novelization written by screenwriter Charles Edward Pogue goes in-depth with the characters, their thoughts, dreams, and motivations. It also explores the world they're in and fleshes out the story at a better pace than the film, which feels rushed and should have had a longer running time. The book is the definitive version of DragonHeart that should have been made, a mature fantasy-adventure that takes people to another place and makes them feel for the characters.
Made a petition for a remake-
