Maybe not of all time, but I have to admit I agree it is overrated.
I finally got around to seeing it last week. (Was a kid when it came out, and then the only thing that had kind of kept me away from it was I heard it had some disturbing violence). Thought I would try it because Siskel & Ebert, and many others praised it to high heaven. It was also was one of the only '90s movie in AFI's top 100.
I'm a big fan of the Coen brothers' work, and I like quirky movies and dark comedies.
I love Steve Buscemi and William H. Macy, so to me that makes it automatically better than average. I thought the relationship between Marge & the husband was sweet. I also thought the fate of the money was a cool plot point.
But.I guess I don't get why this movie is so adored and at a "masterpiece" level. If I were rating the top 20 movies of the 90s, this wouldn't even make my cut, but I know it would probably be included on most people's list. Better than the English Patient though haha.
The only thing I can think of is that my expectations were too high from 20 years of hype; OR maybe the film has influenced so many other works (that I saw BEFORE Fargo) that it doesn't seem as innovative as it did for an audience seeing it in 1996. -

It's a brilliant film. Dark, but hilarious at times. Friendly but violent. The characters are all superbly written and the movie doesn't drag at any time and reaches an excellent climax.
Each to their own, I guess. -

No it's a brilliant film. One of the Coen's best and one of the best of that year.
Very funny dark humour and wonderful performances.
For the most overrated movie of all times try Braveheart

In a word.yes. This is an OK effort for what has become accepted as "good" films. It is, however, not worthy of being considered as something that deserves to be in the "Top" anything (except for the top over-rated films of all time.)

I think everything you said in your post was plain nonsense. 'not funny' in a way i agree, but this is film isn't supposed to be a total comedy. 'unrealistic' many movies can be unrealistic, but how can that make it bad? as long as it fits the story/characters, then it should work well. 'underwritten' I think this film is thoroughly written, so what is your explanation for how it's underwritten? And this film is far from plain bad, The actors have great chemistry with each other, which total holds the film up, The films script works well, i just wish your post would go into more explanation for it to rise above a typical hater opinion.

Oh yes! The most over-rated movie of all time! Also, the most boring movie ever made. And, let's not forget the third leg of the classic, IMDB triumvirate chock full of gay content!
"poor, boring, not funny, unrealistic, underwritten and just plain bad"..dude, start making movies! I'd love to see what you come up with. Seriously, provide some back-up for your opinion. Or we can just toss your comments in the troll-bin.
So, 6/10 equals "isn't good" for you?
Now I don't claim to enjoy all of the Coen's work, but I think these two are brilliant film-makers. They remind me of Becker and Fagen of Steely Dan.well-studied students of their medium, highly intelligent and original artists.
