No, not the way Jim Carrey is.

I agree, this was not a role for Jim Carrey at all. Tom Cruise really did play it well. I don't think he'll go down as a brillaint actor but he did a very good job in this role. I don't think Jim Carey would have dealt too well with the emotional scenes. Apart from the 'flipping out' but, which he would of nailed, he would have struggled.

No way. He looks and grins like a jackass. He doesn't have the screen presence that Cruise has.

No way, I like both actors, but this was Tom Cruise at his best. It would have had a different tone with Jim Carrey, plus he did not show his dramatic chops until a few years later. The Jim Carrey of 1999-2007 might have done a decent job, but Jerry Maguire came out in 1996, only one year after Ace Ventura and two years after Dumb and Dumber.

Jim Carrey would have out-"SHOW ME THE MONEY"-ed Cuba in that scene. Besides taking away some of Cuba's spotlight, he would have made the whole movie a bit wackier. All that would have probably cost Cuba the Oscar. And we would have missed his exhilirating acceptance speech.

The title role was written for Tom Hanks. Alec Baldwin, Johnny Depp, Sean Penn and Bruce Willis were also considered for the lead role.

Nah. While it's not difficult to imagine him in the role (based on
                        Liar Liar
), I seriously doubt he would have been an improvement over Cruise. Cruise was perfect.
Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

                          Carrey would have been interesting.

I'm not a huge Cruise fan, but he nails this. He's also has the look. I believe him as a sports agent.
