I wasn't happy with Claire Danes in this role. I don't think she is a bad actress, but I do think she was miscast in this role. I think Jennifer Connelly or Jennifer Garner would have been amazing choices!

Jennifer Connelly was 26 when this came out. Far too old to play a 15 year old.

Natalie Portman was supposed to portray Juliet, but the producers thought her age wasn't suitable, which was ridiculous, since Juliet was 13 in the play and Nat was 14/15, I think?

It wasn't just that her age wasn't suitable, it was that she looked way too young against DiCaprio, who was (I think) 21-ish at the time.

I didn't care for her as Juliet either. I guess it's just how Juliet is written in general for me because I have seen basically every film version and have been to a Romeo and Juliet play and I never really seen a Juliet I thought was any good. The way Leo described it, a lot of the actresses who auditioned kept looking over his shoulder and Claire Danes was the only one who came in, looked him in the eye, and said every line "with power". Natalie Portman was in talks of playing Juliet until she and Leo got together to read and they noticed how much older he seemed to be than her.

I actually think Clair Danes did well in this role, and she had a lot of chemistry with Leo. I could never see Jennifer Garner in this part as I don't think she is a very good actress.
