The battle scene at the end was absolutely horrible. It appeared that it was done completely without any skill at all, and was COMPLETELY out of character with the balance of the entire movie! It looked like a director's guild intern shot it, with that terrible zoom-in and out as the guns fired. What the hell kind of idiotic crap is that? It almost made me puke. The direction of those scenes had NONE of the character that Ridley is known for- and utterly stood out from the entire rest of the movie! I couldn't believe that anything like that could ever forced upon a helpless audience by a director.
The editing was positively atrocious. They jumped around to illogical, pointless and stupid cuts too- like one putz of a guy who kept yelling like a cowboy whenever he shot- one-handed and from the hip yet! And also completely unaimed- with friendly-forces in the line of fire! And what's with everybody sitting around and smoking in the middle of a critical mission- with nukes involved???
Then- to add insult to injury, the Cobra gunships made gunshot noises when they fired their supposed "rockets".
Perhaps the WORST battle sequence I have EVER seen in cinema!

Anyone would agree. It was pretty ridiculous for any number of reasons.

I completely agree. I know this was made in the late 90s where CGI wasn't in full play but at least make an attempt to make it real. The Cobra rocket pods, when shown in front view, was completely empty. You can tell because you can see right through the tubes. Then when they fire, they only fire ONE rocket, thus only ONE explosion? WTF? I think I know how those rocket pods work. You pull the trigger and a bunch of rockets launch.AND..there's usually a smoke trail.
The gun fights was also hokey. I kept hearing the same bullet ricochet sounds that drove me nuts.
I thought this movie was done by Tony Scott, Ridley's brother. Instead, it was actually directed by Ridley, which makes it disappointing.

The battle sequences were directed by Terry Needham, but we saw Ridley on occasion. But i certainly agree with all here- the editing turned interesting and not terribly inaccurate combat into pure muck. Oh well, we had a great time and made more than a few bucks.

Wouldn't call it 'ridicously bad' but I would agree that it was thr worst part of the film.

It was pretty ugly the way it quickly zoomed in and out as they were firing the guns, ruined the action scenes, never seen anything like it before or since

It's extremely weak and Terry Needham is plagiarizing himself from Rambo III! A direct lift as a matter of fact.
