He was a sneaky douche about it, but Ed should have been responsible for helping pay back the damage that was done in the accident. Dexter didn't have to act like a super smooth trickster about it either. A simple, honest "hey, Ed, since you pretty much caused my accident and now you're getting all of this extra money, do you mind helping me pay back my weirdo teacher?" Ed, in a heartbeat, would have been all for it. Not because he'd feel responsible but just because he was a nice kid.

I actually saw this movie again recently after God knows how many years and I thought the same thing. I guess Dexter figured that if he cheated Ed, he'd get more money out of him than if he'd ask him for some money. But still, regardless of whose fault it was, Dexter shouldn't have been behind the wheel in the first place. If he waited another year to get his license, he would have never swerved and smashed into that Superfly wannabe's car.

This, if Dexter hadn't been in a car he had no business being in, he wouldn't have totaled Mr. Wheat's car. BUT, if he hadn't crashed into Mr. Wheat and HAD to get a summer job to pay off the car, he never would've been able to help Ed take down Mondo Burger, so it all worked out anyway.

          Yeah, it really did.
And I agree, OP, Dexter WAS right, Ed should've been at fault for what happened even though Dex shouldn't have been behind the wheel. I always LOL'd at Roger left and you never saw him again.

Oh yea, it was Ed's fault that Dexter was driving his mom's car in the first place without a license. Whatever.

You're right. It was his fault for causing the accident.
