Right after Ordell kills Louis in the van - he says to him, "What happened to you man? Her ass used to be beautiful".

Charlie: "When you weighed one hundred and sixty-eight pounds you were beautiful."
Sound somewhat familiar ? If not, watch 1954s "On the Waterfront".
Same thing just that the 'language' (your a**) wouldn't have gone over in the 50s.
But, without a doubt, both characters meant the same thing. -

I agree with OP that this line was unusual because when i watched it on Netflix with the captions it said "Her ass" I was confused. The captions could of messed up but if it wasnt a flub i just expected he meant Melanie.
Oh my god, unisex names killed my family. -

Its a little bit hard to hear, but Ordell says 'Her ass used to be beautiful'. At that instance he was referring to Melanie. His beautiful white surfer gal.
I mean, since Louis shot her. Makes sense that Ordell was still a bit upset over that. -

I'm really shocked this line needs clarification.
Eonaxes (and a few others) got it. It was " your ass" NOT " her ass". Samuel L. Didn't get pissed about Melanie getting shot ( well if ya had to do it, ya had to do it). He was pissed that Louis didn't put 2 & 2 together when he saw Max Cherry. The old Louis would've seen Max there and shut that sh!t down with the quickness. This new Louis has lost his edge and thinks a bail bondsman in the middle of the day is shopping for his wife at the same time a major money transaction is going down. The old "beautiful" Louis ( street wise and savvy) antennas would've been raised while the new Louis let that whole thing go over his head. Ordell sees this new Louis as a liability ( kinda like Beaumont is a liability) and had to cut him loose Roby- style.
Now, it's been a while since I've seen this, but. Are there any scenes with Max and Louis? How does Louis know who Max was? Unless they crossed paths in the movie and I forgot. -

@bossat2822
But Samuel L. did get mad when he found out Melanie got shot ("you couldnt have just slapped her?") but as criminals often do, he just dealt with it and moved on.
Once it became clear that Louis was incompetent, he got shot and then Samuel's last line to Louis was 2-part (1. What the beep happened to you man? and then 2. Her ass used to be beautiful. -> referring to his now-dead white surfer gal).
He was still a bit upset about Melanie.. Obviously Louis got shot for a different reason but that didnt mean it wasnt in Samuel's mind still.
To answer your other question: Louis also met Max the first time they visit him at his business. Louis gets told (or decides to) wait in the car. And Samuel L explains him how the alarm system works. -

Thanks for reminding me about Louis meeting Max.
Now, I'm not saying ordell was thrilled Louis shot Melanie, but his demeanor sharply changed when Louis throws in the fact that max cherry was in the store. His face contorts up and orders louis " look at me when I'm talking to you!"
I'll have to go on YouTube or somewhere to see if I hear " her ass" or " your ass" -

He says "your ass used to be beautiful" for sure.
Ever since Louis was out of prison he couldn't cope with outside life what was pretty clear throughout.
Still Ordell trusted him from past experience to find out Louis lost his touch and not only killed Melanie but more importantly lost the money
That was real? I saw that movie, I thought it was bullsh*t -

Wow really ? Cordell says " what happened YOU used to be beautiful" as in Louis years ago used to be a really skilled criminal, really sharp and smart , wouldn't forget to tie up loose ends..catch my drift?
Then he goes to prison afew times and loses his motivation and his edge, hes gotten sloppy.
So Cordell shoots him because he lost the money then shoots Melanie in a mall parking lot.
He says " if you had to shoot her than I guess you had to shoot her. He wasn't so much mad about the girl as he was the sloppy way he shoots here in public and doesn't get the money. He's a liability now so he basically says Louis you used to be the man back in the day and now you're nothing but a liability and shoots him -

Everyone in this thread is wrong He says, "What happened to you man, OUR ass used to beautiful." He was referring to when they used to work together and worked well, and now he is past it and making far too many mistakes.

There was a bit of irony in that line (at least in the books). Ordell himself used to be a reasonably good natured guy. By the end of Rum Punch, he had become ruthless and blood thirsty. He was no longer the beautiful person he once was.

I'll have to check that one out, it sounds good. I also enjoyed Out of Sight, another one based on Elmore Leonard's works, so I have a feeling I'll like his stuff.

the two guys were lovers, obviously the white guy got old and fat.
Ordell wasn't attracted to him anymore. that's what it meant (You see little hints of them being lovers all throughout out the movie. there are many hints) the sharing of the white girl was proof for me because Ordell didn't even get mad, he wanted Louis to enjoy the woman.
but when Louis and the woman hvae intercourse, it is not normal, he doesn't face her, little hints like that -

Guy clearly said 'your ass' and it can only make sense that way. He obviously didn't mean his literal ass, geez. Like some other people have said already, Ordell simply means Louis used to be a good crook, but isn't anymore.
If he meant Melanie, then saying 'used to' instead of 'was' makes zero sense.
'Our ass' makes even less sense than that.:D -

Well yeah, I just don't understand how the top poster of this thread isn't familiar with the term, unless American English is his/her second language then I can understand them not understanding the colloquial meaning of the term.

Thought it was Your also but after watching it again, I believe it was Her. The reason is that earlier he had said that she (Melanie) used to be beautiful and later on when he was talking to Max after Max gave him the 10k, he again mentions that Louis could have just hit and not shot her and you could tell that he was very upset. So IMO Louis was a dead man for shooting Melanie already Ordell just wanted some time to figure things out before he killed him. Once he found out about Max being outside the dressing room, he had the connection with Jackie and no longer needed Louis.

I think he was counting on Louis to be a reliable and trustworthy associate - something he does not have in this film. Jackie, his most intelligent associate, is not to be trusted, he couldn't trust Melanie, which is why he sent Louis with her to the department store, and one of his other female associates was given some money earlier and ran off. He shot Beaumont because he rightly suspected he would start talking to the police. But Louis did not make the grade.
