Completely and utterly agree. Titanic is one of the worst pieces of excrement to ever win Best Picture. L.A. Confidential is a masterpiece.

If that is the case, then why did Titanic outgross LAC by a ratio of almost 10 to one?

Because most people are idiots. Why do so many people like Justin Bieber and Nickelback and Mariah Carey? Popularity doesn't mean beep

Why do those artists you mentioned have fans? Because their music speaks to them. It has less to do with intelligence than simple TASTE. One has little connection to the other, ultimately. One could say that more smart people tend to like 'high-brow' entertainment - which LA Confidential doesn't qualify as, however.

Titanic was so bloated and full of pretentious hot air I still wonder how that ship managed to sink.
The rift between these films seems to divide across the line of films as art versus film as entertainment for the masses.
LA Confidential was the best film of 1997.

Titanic was one of very few (if there are any other) films that won Oscar for best picture, but wasn't even nominated for best screenplay, both or neither should be nominated really.
I agree that LA Confidential should have won it. (IMO).
Titanic is a missed opportunity to me, fantastic on a technical level, but let down by a hammy storyline (they should have given Billy Zane a moustache to twirl like in the early melodramas).

Disagree. The love story in titanic sets the bar for movies following it. It surpasses the Cary Grant/Deborah Kerr "An Affair a To Remember" by football fields. It's one story, love, told by many characters. This movie has multiple subplots leading to one character, but it hasn't set the bar, in my opinion. I like "A Touch Of Evil" for the bar setter.

Looking up the nominees I'm more surprised that The Full Monty was nominated. But seriously, all the nominees were good in their own right. Comparing them is rather pointless as they all have different strengths. Titanic, as someone said, was an event to the point that our grandmothers went to see it. Not at all surprised that it won.

Yes it should have. I pisses me off that a movie as great as this lost to some billion dollar chick flick.

You are clearly an ignorant retard if you honestly think Titanic is that bad. There is no subject or objective way Titanic could possibly be as bad as Throw Momma From The Train.

No. Titanic is great in all of those departments as well. But, Cameron's talent as a visual storyteller is too far ahead of its time. People can't see the forest through the glamor.
Rest assured, Titanic totally deserves all of those Oscars and all of the other accolades it received.
Had Titanic not come out that year, yes, LA Confidential would have and should have won Best Picture.
