Kim Basinger seriously won an Oscar for this?

So I finally saw the movie she dissed Alec Baldwin for in that Simpsons episode for having won an Oscar while he never had, and I can't say it was deserved (yes I know it might not have bee her idea to include that, but you get my point)
Yes I know it was for a supporting role and it was a terrible year for movies (Titanic being dickrided there speaks for itself), but she had little screen time and little plot relevance. Surely there had to have been another role with a supporting female actor more deserving, right? -

I disagree that 1997 was a bad year for movies. Men in Black, Good Will Hunting, As good as it gets, and Liar Liar are all pretty good movies.

I did not know this and I'm really shocked that this role got her an Oscar.
Btw, as others mentioned, 1997 isn't really a bad year for movies. Titanic might be overrated for most people here, but it's still up there at the box office which should talk enough.

I agree. Kim's performance did not appear Oscar-worthy to me. Any number of actresses could have done as well. Her role was to be the voice of reason and compassion, while mayhem swirled all around her.
This is a "male-heavy" film, with few female characters. Since the movie's theme is crime at all levels of local government law enforcement, females didn't play a big role. Females don't do mass violent crime as well as do males.

She wasn't bad. Better than the other nominees. The REAL best supporting actress of the year would be the withdrawing mother from Ulee's Gold.
And 1997 a bad year? I can see you not liking Titanic, but The Ice Storm? Boogie Nights? Donnie Brasco? Lee's Gold? The Game? Liar Liar? Contact??? -

Nah, 1997 was pretty good. LA Confidential, Good Will Hunting, The Fifth Element, Boogie Nights, Jackie Brown, even stuff like Starship Troopers, Cop Land, Donnie Brasco & Gattaca! Gattaca was great!
re: Titanic, sure the story is beep the main actors are beep and all that, but watch that movie again and pay attention to the effects, man! The Titanic was like a swansong for big PRACTICAL special effects. After that CGI pretty much took over. It deserves some solid props for that at least.
And re: the actual topic, that one guy probably had the right idea when he said that the two Oscars La Confidential got were pretty much consolation prizes. They HAD to give this movie SOMETHING! Looking at the nominees for that category, Julianne Moore definitely should've won for Boogie Nights though.
