The soundtrack was from the early 70's but they were playing cd's in the car. And some of the cars were from the 50's.

The film is scripted to be irrelevant to any particular period in time.
The random integration of old cars, music on CD's, two guys in a bass boat on the lake, the neighborhood kid with a toy pop-gun, etc, are all things we associate with Americana.
