This movie is well-made, polished and designed for maximum impact and with good taste for most of the running time.but it's cheese.
A cheesy screenplay without the humour, satire or drama it could have had.
I expected more intelligent and witty dialogue, something like in Bergman's
"The Seventh Seal" which is far better.
But it was mostly very slow, very simple and not-too-bright dialogue that served only the plot and not much more.
A wasted opportunity.
And the 6 minute sex scene (no kidding) looks just like a Playgirl foto session, too much aiming at pleasuring females.
It tries to be so classy, but at the same time it's so long.
And the fireworks are beautiful, but too many.
The production design (Dante Ferreti) and the cinematography (Lubezki) are so amazing, that they rescue the whole film.
You can eat it with your eyes.
