The Hollywood vultures were all over this project before it even went into production. They were nay saying while simultaneously bashing Cameron for every little thing that leaked from the Titanic set. While I wasn't a fan of Titanic, I do love "Meet Joe Black". Those same vultures did the same thing to Brad Pitt's World War Z, and it still managed to make $540M worldwide on a $190M budget. Meet Joe Black wasn't a big box office success and probably cost the studio money (after P & A). The public at large was never given a fair chance to like it with every little production problem being reported almost in real time. The vultures had poisoned the well long before it's release.
As Roger Ebert said, there is so much to like about it. It, like "Legends of the Fall" is one of the most beautifully photographed films I've seen. I thought the script was good, there was nuance to appreciate, the actors were not miscast IMO. The sound mixing could have used some help, but I have no idea how this film would be edited and still keep the rich story and performances it has. I will watch it anytime I can on a premium channel that doesn't cut it. As a rule I don't buy DVDs, but I have become so fond of this film I may break down and add it to my very small collection.
The root of all unhappiness is unmet expectation.
