What an abomination the 2001 version is compared to the original and more 'subversive' 1979 version. I really hate when they do that. Please please please watch Bob Clark's "Murder by Decree" and you will understand what I am talking about.

The plot is based on Stephen Knight's book Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution. Apart from some fantastic atmosphere, & rather spooky moments, plus Plummer & Mason as a great Holmes/Watson, Murder By Decree isn't anything to write home about. Neither is this. The terrible plot is more forgivable for Murder By Decree since it was only a few years after Knight's book was published, but I still find it to be a major flaw.

Have you seen the film with Michael Caine/Lewis Colins on Jack The Ripper? Very similar to From Hell,it was made some years before, same type of storyline, worth a watch.
